New Speedo Cable w/ VSS?

I'm moving my cluster over to the right of the steering column and need to swap to a longer speedo cable.

How does the speedo and VSS on the D20 work?

Are the speedo and VSS permanently mated and I need to swap the whole thing or will the old speedo cable come out and I can put the longer one in?

The tension pin on the last pics does not want to budge so I'm guessing they aren't swappable?

you should be able to spread the pin while pushing inward and pull the cable out of the vss

What are you calling a "tension pin"? In the 1st pic, just pull the cable firmly & wiggle until it works out of the hairpin. Then install a longer cable/sheath the same way. I never try to manipulate the hairpin, and the VSS can stay in the t-case.

The cable you're holding in the last pic is the old style, and isn't compatible with the VSS no matter what.

Bump.

Anyone know the right part # for the proper longer speedo cable with VSS?

The cable you're holding in the last pic has the machined spiral end for a plastic gear & NO VSS; that heavy end goes directly into the t-case. The VSS-style cable comes out of the VSS. You can get a longer cable from any '87-91 truck w/4WD & cruise. The 2WD/cruise cable is a couple inches shorter. '92-up don't use a VSS; non-cruise trucks don't use a VSS; cab size has no effect on speedo cable length.

Thanks for the lead Steve, but I ordered a Y-869 which should be for 87-91 (4WD w/cruise, 90" length)like you suggested. The D20/VSS end looks to be correct, but very different on the speedo side. It doesn't have the threaded nut to screw into the back of the '75 Bronco speedo. Do I have to modify the 869 somehow?

I've purchased the Y-801 and the Y-869. Can anyone help a frustrated part searcher find the right speedo cable?

I used a Pioneer CA-3004 with the Bronco cluster speedo end. This requires cutting and removing the other end crimped on end. I got a VSS at the yard with the correct speedo end off a 90s truck. Removed that one too and installed it on the Pioneer cable. Fit good but we'll see how it works in about two weeks here when I'm up and running. It was worth trying as the pre-made ones I was finding were $80. and up.

You cut the speedometer end at the gauge cluster? You then slide the threaded nut on and then crimped it?

What did you use to crimp the end? Did you reuse the metal barrel shaped end or you found a source for a new one?

I don't know if it will work or not but I drilled out the VSS so the spiral end of the stock cable fit, it's plastic so I stepped it up 1 size at a time and spun the drillbit by hand. The gear may be too loose on the VSS though, there's .020- .025 difference.
The cable engages good and spins fine, we'll see.

I was in Shreveport so I stopped by PATC and they said they don't make speedometer cables. They recommended www.speedometersolutions.com I have one on order in 95" length with 5/8" nut and the Ford VSS push-on barrel end. I'll update the thread when I get it to see how it all comes together.

Yep. That's the one you need. 83" is longer than you probably need, but it will fits a lot more applications. You can get the VSS from BC too, at your local autoparts, or boneyard pick a good one. The transfer case hold down clip might need to be turned 180 degrees for the VSS plug.

Would this work?

"This cable is 83" long. It threads on to the stock Bronco speedo head and plugs into a Ford VSS that you insert into the Dana 20."

I have that cable right now and it fits like a champ at the stock cluster location, but it just doesn't make it with the cluster on the right side of the column. C4 and D20

83" should be the stock length. I tried taking as much slack as I could along the frame rail and in the curves and bends, but it was all too tight and binding. I'll update the thread when I receive the custom one.
