1977 dana 20, 95000 miles. Duff's J-shifter. 4w lo, neutral, 4w hi all shift and work fine. Shifts to 2w high but nothing. At 77 years young I am hoping for a simple fix. J-shifter, or linkage at tc. ( I know wishful thinking ) Is there a simple explanation inside the tc that would cause this? Also can I do further damage to the tc by running in 4w hi with hubs out? This bronco is a street only. Thanks

Has the transfer case been separated from the 3 speed adapter since this problem first started? If so, the transfer case input gear could be installed backwards. There are dogs on one side of the gear that mesh with a sliding gear inside the tcase. If the gear is backwards, no meshing can happen. It's a fairly easy fix. The hardest part is the tcase needs to be separated from the 3 speed adapter. The offending gear will be at the rear of the adapter retained with the world's toughest snap ring. It's a common mistake.

Transfer case has always worked and never been separated from the adaptor. Only issue I can think of ( doesn't get driven often ) is when shifting out of 4wd to 2wd. Shifts hard sometimes and I must go forward and reverse to get it to shift. That is why I was hoping maybe a linkage issue? Is there a reason the tc failed? Shifting fork, set screw, detent ball ? If it will do no damage now is the time of year I will be driving it. Thanks for your help.

Does it drive OK in 4H with hubs unlocked? If it does, then rear output is spinning and that would make me think the t-case internals are OK and something in the linkage is not correct. But I'm not familiar with J-shift at all, so can't go any farther w/o looking at one.

Yes, it drives fine in 4H with hubs unlocked. I have sent an e-mail to Duffs asking about the J-shifter linkage. Thanks for your input, I am hoping for a linkage issue!
