no power to ignition....help!

Hi all,

Well, just bought myself a 66 half cab and am trying to get it started. More specifically, just to turn over. In the RUN position, I have no voltage to the solenoid or to the ignition coil....What could be causing this? Where does the ignition get it's power from? I have 12 volts at the battery.

What I am having trouble tracing is the yellow wire from the ignition switch....where it goes, what it does. The yellow wire seems to be corroded and bad. I have the diagrams from N8's page but they don't seems to clarify much if you don't understand the basics. Is there a possible problem with the fuse box???

Any tips would be helpful....Thanks!

just run a jumper to the coil and solenoid from the battery just to turn over.

The yellow wire (21) comes from a 5-way splice under the dash (and in the diagram). Splices 37, 37A and 37B, all black w/ yellow stripe, and a black w/ orange stripe wire (25) which goes to the headlight switch. Wire 37 is the output of the alternator. Wire 37B goes to the ammeter, and leaves the ammeter as plain black wire which goes to the battery cable side of the starter solenoid. Verify that you have a plain black wire on the battery side of the solenoid along with the battery cable. Then crawl up under the dash and find a single wire connector near the ammeter which connects the plain black wire (38) at the ammeter to the black w/yellow stripe wire (37B). If you can continue to trace that black w/ yellow wire you should find the 5-way splice, where the yellow wire runs up to the ignition switch.

With the key in the Run position, power to the coil comes from the Pink resistor wire (16 or 16A). In the START position, power to the coil comes from the starter solenoid on the Brown wire (262) which is splices together with 16 at a connector inside the engine compartment.

I hope you've got a voltmeter!!

Thanks for the info...I'll try the jump in the morning.

Regarding the yellow wire, does THAT supply power to the ignition switch in the RUN and ACC position? If not, what does? Are there any test sequences to the ignition switch itself to see if it is working right????

I believe I have the wiring to the coil correct with the 262 spliced off 16A originally coming from the red/green stripe wire from the ignition switch.

And yes, I've got a voltmeter and a test bulb!

Yes, yellow (21) is power to the switch, regardless of key position. 262 is power from the solenoid to the pink wire (16) only when the solenoid is engaged by the key being in the Start position.

No luck yet, but improvement. I bypassed the yellow wire and ran a hot lead to the battery side of the solenoid....now I'm getting 12V at the solenoid and the + of the coil when in RUN position. When in START position, i just get a "poof" of smoke at the positive battery terminal at the battery and a click from the solenoid. I've got 12V to the S side of the solenoid when cranking also. Nothing from the starter, it's not turning over! It's a new starter too, just bought it from Acme. ?:?

Any suggestions here? How exactly do I jump the starter motor to see if that's working right?

Thanks,
Justin

Sounds like the connection is bad. Take the cable off the terminal and clean them up, then make sure it's tight.

After rereading your first post you say that you just bought this 66. Well I'm gonna assume that just maybe this rig has not run in awhile?

I personally first would pull all the sparkplugs.
second I would squirt a little oil down each plug hole.
Then I would see if I could turn the engine by hand by placing a socket on the crank with a large breaker bar just to make sure that the mill WILL turn/spin.
If everything so far is ok, now try to get the starter to do the work.
When the starter turns the engine over then place the sparkplugs back in .

Yes I know it seems like extra work but you wont be beating your head against the wall chasing a starter/ign problem if it isnt the problem at all.

Thanks guys! It starts and idles...although it blows lots of black smoke out the pipe. Oh well.....another day, another problem.

The cables from the battery weren't tight...so I cleaned em up, changed the plugs, squirt some oil in the holes, manually cranked the engine, and then started it with the key!

Ah, now to deal with the clutch....I'm sure I'll need more advice.

Thanks again!
Justin
