oil blowing ou small hole in side of fuel pump

New to posting on this forum. First of all I am a shade tree mechanic at best, working with my kids to restore my 68 that has a rebuilt 302. Have been working on finding a oil leak. I finally found it, when revving the engine there is oil blowing out of a small hole on the side of the fuel pump and spraying on the oil filter. When idling no oil leak. Is that hole to suppose to be there? if so what do I need to do to get the leak to stop? I recently changed from a PCV value to a breather on the valve cover, could this cause the problem? Reason for the change is the vacuum was drawing some oil into the carb causing small amounts of blue smoke. took it to the local mechanic and he said the PCV valve wasn't needed and to install a breather of the valve cover instead. any ideas or thoughts are greatly appreciated

That hole is normal its basically a weep hole usually what happens is when your fuel pump starts going bad fuel will leak out of it. Never seen oil blow out but If you have to much crankcase pressure that would cause it.
Id put the PCV valve back in just make sure your valve covers have baffles that will help cut down on the oil sucked up. Sounds like your engine is pretty well worn since when you removed the PCV valve your leak started because you have to much crankcase pressure. Many time you will also have problems with the crankshaft seals due to to much pressure.
Most likely with breathers the valve covers will start becoming a oily mess. As once the blowby collects enough in the breathers the oil will start seeping out.
Might want to run heavier oil that may help cut down on some of the oil in the blow by. Also oil that is close to be needing to be changed will be diluted with gas and will get into the blow by easier so fresh oil may help as well.

I've had that pivot pin hole leak oil too. When it happens, it leaks a lot. You should replace the pump. Reinstall the PCV. Engines will collect moisture and gasoline in the crankcase. Those mixed with your old oil will develop an acid that attacks the bearing materials. I doubt it's causing your fuel pump leak though.

thanks for the responses. I was wonder when both mentioned positive crankcase ventilation. I only have the breather on one valve cover and the other has neither a hole for oil fill, PVC, or breather. should I change the valve cover to equal out he pressure and help ventilation?

The PCV valve goes on one valve cover and the filtered air inlet on the other. That lets the whole engine to get ventilation.

makes since, the valve covers I have only have a hole on one of the valve cover. so maybe should get another style and try that first

Yeah you probably need more airflow and if you put a PVC valve back in you need a place for inlet air.
While just using breathers on a engine works in most cases your better off with a PCV valve as it will get more of the blowby out than just breathers.

After I noticed oil spray on the front side of my oil filter I found the same problem. Fuel pumps are cheap and a new one fixed the problem. I cut the old one open to find the cause. The shaft that rides on the arm has a seal that went, allowing oil spray from the cam sprocket and timing chain to come out of the hole. Easy fix is a new pump. I think without the hole a perforation in the diaphragm could pump gas into the crank case.

Thanks for the responses I will get a new pump installed this week and change out the valve covers with a breather on one side and the PCV valve on the other.I will follow up and let you know how it goes. Thanks again
