A neighbor has a 289 that keeps blowing up/breaking oil filters. I guess tye pressure is super high for some reason. Engine has been rebuilt but the oil pump was not replaced

Any thoughts

FL1A filter has a burst pressure of 200 psi. Seems like the oil pump would not be capable of that high pressure. You'd think the gasket would blow first

Could be a plugged oil passage

Any pictures?

Is it blowing out around the seal? Check to see that there isnt a remaining seal stuck up against the block.

I've seen stuck pressure relief valves in small blocks before. Usually just swells up the filter, have not seen it blow it out. Considering there are multiple failures you can rule out a random bad filter. Time to drop the pan and put in a new pump.

Back when I had my parts store .. I had some Fram's blow out .& That customer had a Walmart filter blow up on it also . Seemed like the FLIA DID NOT BLOW nor did the WIX.
... I'D THINK IT was the RELIEF Valve after all.

There's a releaf valve on the pump, but I'd think the distributor to oil pump shaft would twist off before the pressure got that high.

Sounds like the relief valve is stuck. I had one blow out the seal on two fram filters--put on a FL1A and it pushed out one of the oil plugs at the front of the block. That was on a freshly built engine that sat for about 10 years before its initial fire up.
