Not sure I understand correctly but - i believe they're talking about the " big" factory black with yellow stripe wire . It has a " bullet " connection somewhere close to the ammeter loop.
This wire has to be connected or the alternator won't charge.

Looks like an after market VOLT meter. If so you have nothing to loop. On your volt meter you should have + for a switched battery + wire and - for ground.

How about some better pics of the gauge? It could be a voltmeter or it could be an ammeter. The wiring is very different for each.

Just checked it is a voltmeter. Does anyone know which one is positive and which is negative. I'm assuming the all black is positive but wanted anyone's inputs.

If you mean the all-Black and Black w/yellow wires, then as was said they are both positive.
AND YOU DO NOT USE EITHER OF THOSE WIRES FOR A VOLT-METER.

Sounds like Painless still leaves it up to the installer to connect the two wires together with a supplied crimp connector? If so you are basically going to connect them as expected, but separate from the gauges because there is no longer an ammeter able to use them.
You do NOT want to use that charge wire for connecting to a volt-meter or you will have really big problems you don't want to know about. In other words you "let the smoke out" of the wires.
Sorry if you knew that part already, but it's important enough to repeat.

So to reiterate, for the wire that Painless says is for the ammeter, you just leave it alone and in one piece, just tied up out of the way under the dash.
Any of the extra smaller "switched" wires in the new harness can be used for the one terminal on the gauge (whichever one everyone confirms is correct) and the other should be a ground. That ground you likely have to make up yourself.

What alternator are you using by the way? This is just for lower amp stock type alternators anyway.
