I'm with bighorn. Modularity is key. I am not far off from buying harnesses and it's sickens me that if I want a chassis harness and an EFI harness I'll have to drop over $1200 bucks to get both.

I would very pleased with Painless if I could get a modular solution for less green so I could wire up my EFI 5.0 to the rest of my Bronco.

You do realize that with a Painless EFI harness the only wire you have to splice into on a chassis harness is a switched 12 volt source right? All of our EFI harnesses are stand alone units.

I don't follow what you are saying. What I am saying is that I need a new chassis harness and since Painless sells a plug and play option for EFI for the 5.0, I'll have to buy both at >$500 a pop. It would be nice if Painless had a more cost effective option for us guys with EFI needing a new chassis harness.

There wouldn't be any real savings creating a chassis/efi harness together. The only savings would be in the packaging, going from 2 seperate boxes to one. In this case even that wouldn't create any savings. It would involve us bringing in a bigger box that would fit both the chassis and EFI harness. So in all reality, the end cost difference would be in th $5-$10 range. I've tried to come up with a "full" wiring kit in a box to cover efi & chassis for those in your situation, I thought about doing it with the early mustang harnesses we sell.. There's really no way to take any cost out to make it a better choice over buying a chassis harness and EFI harness seperate.

The chassis harness and the EFI harness are completely separate things. There's no overlap in the two harnesses. It's best to keep them separate simply because they are separate even on the original EFI equipped vehicles like the Mustang and the Explorer. For cost savings you can always use the original Mustang harness (lots of us have) but even the newest one we would use is about 15 years old.

So THAT's where your dash went.

Funny too, how much more substantial and intimidating a factory harness looks when it's still stuffed under the dash, as opposed to sitting there on a table.
Almost wimpy when you see it that way.

Although, I do like the way Ford (and probably the other O.E.'s too) did the splices.
Their method: Take wires... Jumble together... Twist, solder, crimp... Then wad the whole thing in a big cube of rubber!
Not necessarily pretty, but VERY durable, and weather-tight even after 40 years.
The splices were about the only things not completely melted on a friend's '69.

I dont know about the Painless harness, but when i bought the centech harness it gave a new ignition switch.which is all fine but I wasnt able to use the stock crome ignition ring. I think that is something that should be added for the people with less mods and more of a stock look.

Hey Paul!
The wires wee in great shape. All the desert years couldn't penetrate that loom tape. I think that painless will braid wrap the new loom. Good Stuff. :)

Eric pointed out a new headlight switch but I can't remember, for sure about the ignition. I will let you all know how the switches look when they reassemble it. :)

our harness has always come with a new headlight switch, ignition switch, and dimmer switch. I've never heard of any one having problems with trim rings with the ignition switch. The dimmer switch will be comming out of the kit because I feel those can be found cheaper at a auto parts store than what they add to the cost of our harness. Besides it was a GM dimmer switch, what Ford guy wants a GM switch in their rig? I am also going to try and put some kind of loom in the kit. To keep the price down it may not be installed, I've got to cut cost from this harness. I'd rather take production labor price out of the harness than materials that the consumer could use .From what I gather looking through these forums as well as others, it makes no difference how complete a kit is, people have a hard time justifing $600+ for wiring when they can get some knock off harness for less than $150 on ebay.

Sooner or later I will be buying a new harness for my EB and I can tell you that without a doubt, I will either buy Centech or Painless.

One, I know that with either, I will get the benefits and features we need in an EB.

Two, I know that it will be Top Shelf quality and parts.

Three, support.

The deciding factor for me, between the two, will be ease of installation and the EB communities opinion.

I have seen the Centech harness, and actually helped install part of it. The quality was great, ease of installation....could have been better (delay wiper switch), but still a very nice harness.

I'm anxious to see how this new painless harness comes together.

I guess my point is...as long as the price is reasonable, price is not the issue. I'm not going to buy a painless if it cost hundreds more than a Centech with no sagnificant added feature(s). There have been many upgrades I have already done where I could have went cheap (lunch box locker vs ARB), but didn't because I want the best. I, like many others, am not filthy rich, I work extra jobs for the parts I buy, but for me, I'd rather save up a little longer and get the best parts I can. A lot of people in the EB community want the best for their EBs.

Picked it up

Eric was nice enough to pick me up and drive me back to Painless to pick up my rig. I gave him some LEBC swag, took a picture, and went on my way. I will be at Big Schucks, in Plano TX tonight to show it off. Come on out if you would like to see it. ;D The picture is of Eric at Painless; who made this all happen.

Eric, you said: "From what I gather looking through these forums as well as others, it makes no difference how complete a kit is, people have a hard time justifing $600+ for wiring when they can get some knock off harness for less than $150 on ebay."
One thing you are forgetting is that there are many facets of automobile repair work that people are not comfortable with. Personally, I have never delved deeper into my engine than removing a head. I leave that to someone who is an expert. Many people feel the exact same about wiring. I know I don't completely understand all of the electrical gremlins pulsing around in my rig. My point is this. If I had to pay someone to install a new wiring harness, I'd be lookin at a 20 hour job at what, $60-125 per hour? No hobbyist can afford that. What I will pay $600 for is a perfect harness. If the feedback on your product was that it was a perfect install, required noithing more than time to install, all of the wiring diagrams were as simple, correct, and clear as possible, I'd buy it. For me $150 for a box of wires is not a deal. I need the correct switches installed. I need the switches either to fit the existing opening, or unplug from whatever you supply (if I decide not to use them) and plug directly into my stock switches. I want it to fit into the existing location in the glove box, etc. At some point here, everyone who is in your target market is going to agree, you get what you pay for. I don't mind paying for a perfect product.
