Been puttering about working on incidentals.
Onboard Air, quick access fire extinguisher, and I set up an antenna for my haam radio. At some point I’ll probably get myself a mobile radio kit, just not sure whether I want to go gmrs or dual band.

Wait, I missed the post about you taking it to work?! Dang!
Was that a fun day and did you get a lot of comments? Everybody glad to see the fruits of your labor?

Curious about your rear cargo net. I need something like that for the backseat of my pickup (company policy about securing loose items).

It went well and people were intrigued with what I did. If it wasn’t for the red labels, I’d drive it most days… diesel is not a great commute fuel these days.
Still have not had a chance to get it on the trail though.

Even if no actual trail time, the mud flipped up all over the side of the body sure makes it look like it's been doing time off road!

So- I finally got it off road and it was amazing. So much better than I had hoped for. It is a beast.
I’m taking it to Windrock next. Hoping to have it straightened out by then. I tore it up pretty good, right out the gate.

I pushed in both rock sliders @3” and crushed the font nose pretty good.

The nose damage exposed a lot previously Bondo’ed over damage. I pulled it out fairly well.

Still working on pushing the rockers back out.
I had meant to tie them into the frame but just never got to it. Hoping to get to it before Windrock.

Other than that, I couldn’t be more pleased.

Now that I have my spring rates somewhat figured out, I’ve been having a blast wheeling it. I had a chance to go to Windrock for the Ultimate Off Road Fieldtrip and wow I learned a lot about my rig.
I learned about all of the new noises it makes… I learned that one day at Windrock will break in your new coilovers to the tune of 1.5” of reduction in ride height.
I learned that while I made one hell of a rock crawler, I did not build a rig capable of the skinny pedal shenanigans that are necessary on a wet trail day at Windrock. Every jamb nut on my suspension came loose, half of the link mount bolts came loose. My new long wheelbase and long driveshaft make for easy rock food.

So, built myself some belly armor.

I just got back from Good Evening Ranch playing on some big rocks and tore my Trac Bar mount off at the frame, trail repaired it and that made it for another day before it really tore out my frame.

All fixable stuff. Break, fix, repeat.
But I noticed that on one rock that I took a bad line on, tipping myself as far over as I’d ever felt before (was sure I was going over), that I have really bad body lean. Once I saw the photo from the front and saw the angle on my axle shaft versus my hood line, I knew that there had been little chance of going over, but in another situation with momentum it might be possible that the body could pull me over?
Anyone have suggestions on how to solve this? Stiffer springs, less droop via shorter limit straps, front sway bar?

Looks like you’ve been having fun and learning.

A front swaybar will help some but the other part is you’re learning how far you can go before it gets on its side. I can see in the pic that the rear was not unloading badly yet, so it may have felt terrible but not going over yet. Body lean can be unnerving but it’s not as physically bad as it can be mentally bad.

The best advice I can give is find a dirt ravine that you can make laps on and push your limits on off camber where there is some control when it does go over it doesn’t go far and you can usually drive out of the roll with little to no damage. Does 2 things, one you get some stress inoculation, you become more comfortable with how things feel. the more relaxed you are from conditioning the more in tune you are with what is going on the more you can push those limits without going to far. The other is it teaches you how far is too far. It takes seat time to figure all of that out.

Thanks Steve. Okay, so that much body lean is okay, I just need to know the limits of my truck and then determine if my limits can be made to match. Hahaha

Yeller at ride height I have @3 inches of preload front and rear now. My 14” upper spring is now 7” long.
Should I just run it or look for a stiffer spring? If stiffer how much? 25lbs or 50lbs?

The preload is only an issue if you’re getting spring bind before the bump stop bottoms out. Spring bind is hard on parts, shocks, shock parts and springs.

I’m finding your spring settling issues interesting. Normally the settling is very minimal, 1-1/2” is quite a lot.

It was wheeling at Windrock that really did it.
I’m fairly certain I have plenty of coil compression to go yet, certainly on the lower coils.
