Should I remove the body for ease

So i am getting reeady to do a 4r70 atlas install. I am thinking that If I remove the body it will make it a lot easier. I also want to wrap the headers, and do a few other things like install mesh inner fenders and T stat and water pump.

The main reason I ask is because my body, although it looks fuckin awesome, hurts. I have a hard time getting up and down and working from the ground.

My rig is rust free and very solid. I did the 2 inch body lift a while back with ease.

what are the pluses and minuses?

Definitely easier with it out of the way but you might end up with unforeseen clearance issues doing the swap with the body off. Also depending on what lifts/body cart you have it may be tough to get it all lined back up nice. I'm in the same boat with a back injury. I have tons of tools to do most bronco projects but more often buying lots of beer and pizza so my friends will help me out.

Removing the body could lead to a frame up rebuild. It could be years before you drive it again so be careful, don't get sucked into the vortex.;D

Yep the vortex get s you every time, like removing the wall to fix the plumbing. But I fully understand, sometimes I’m crawling on my hands and knees to get up from being under the bronco. Find a small good transmission shop and just pay them, but be there to watch. Haaa

Jim’s warning is worth noting. I’m in the “vortex” on my off road build, but I have another ride. Lifting the tub not overly technical but goes better with planning. Not just body mounts, also steering, trans, petals, fuel, wiring, etc to consider. If uhave room might consider just lifting and blocking (safely) or ramp to get a more comfortable work space. Good luck !

it's funny how you dudes mention the vortex.... I was talking with a fellow car buddy about removing the body. we then moved on to say that while it was off I could redi the frame and run new headlines for fuel and breaks.....
I guess that's how it starts..

While I have it easy to get to...... and that's how the snowball starts.

You might reconsider that header wrap, it is likely to cause the headers to rust since it captures condensation when the headers cool. You may be better off to shield the parts you want to protect from the heat instead, unless replacing the headers is planned for in the next few years.

While i am at it has been a death blow to many a project and maybe a relation ship or two. Take the body off kiss your credit card good bye. You will be financing other peoples kids through college. You will also want to buy a Jeep you can drive before the body ever sees the frame again. Good luck hope your plans work out better than the rest of ours.

Omg , I agree with the vortex ! Bought my first and totally tore it down frame off, then ran into r&d problems. Couldnt decide how to build it and ran into things way out my skill level. So i bought another. It too sits in my garage awaiting a “ light” resto. Been dang near ten yrs but im back on it. At least one of them....

Interesting, I did buy a jeep cause my frame off took so long.

DO NOT wrap headers unless you want to replace them in 5 years, they will rust out.

I could not imagine doing any tranny mod other than known plug and play without body off, so unless you know everything will fit, I'd say take bodsy off or at least raise it further.

I think the atlas install is more of an issue than the 4r70, lots of talk on clocking and frame issues.
