For 7 years I coached little league. I reserved a field at one of the city parks every year, on tuesday and thursdays every season. This one time we got to the field and there was a mentally challenged softball team practicing on our field. I went up to the manager of the team and asked how long they were going to be. Till Dark he replied. I told him that I pay to reserve this field and he is welcome to the outfield if he wanted to run some drills. He declined and told me his team was staying. About this time I hear the kids shouting, turn around and 2 kids from my team are fighting with the other team. Well we get everyone under control ( and that was not easy) about the time two park rangers show up. We have to explain to the rangers what happened. They kick everyone off the field and ban us from using the field for a week. We practiced on a grass field that day and when we were done I called the group together. I explained to my 9 and 10 year olds about not fighting and what happened was wrong, and always look for a better way to solve problems, and that we could not practice on the field next week. When I was done I asked the team what we had learned today. Thomas Stone shouted out, " we learned it's stupid to argue with the retards" It was a moment where I actually busted out laughing. Thomas had busted out with the life lesson of the day. It's funny how I will never forget Thomas, but there are times I can't follow his advice. Thomas Lost his Father that year, he had a strong mother that kept him on a tight leash. Thomas graduated from west point 2 years ago. He played 3 years on the Army football team. He is now an officer stationed some where overseas hopefully not
