Speedo Needle Jump

I am sure there are plenty of threads but most end the replacement of the cable. Quick history - the gauge cluster was sent off and rebuilt 3 years ago and everything was golden until 2 months ago. I lubed the cable and no joy. Replaced the cable speedo gear and still jumping and bouncing everywhere. It should be noted that the old cable and gear did not look bad at all.

Is the next step another rebuild on speedo or new one? Anyone got any suggestions and some simple checks before dropping more money and time?

You might want to replace the speedometer head. They can be had for $150 or so from the resellers.

Sometimes it's just the way the cable is routed. I have tinkered with them and eventually got the needle to stop bouncing just by moving the cable to a certain position. You can also disconnect the cable at the transfer case, pull the end back up under the hood, and hook a cordless drill to it. Then see it it bounces while the cable is straighter. You can try it with different cables, swap cable cores in the housings etc to test. I had one that would only work with a new core in the old housingÂ…go figure.

Well, new cable installed and spent a better part of the afternoon routing and re-routing and trying different angles to stop the jump. As previously suggested I even swapped internals between old cable and new cable and still no luck. Really did not want to R&R head unit but at this point I am not sure what else it could be.

Any warranty available from the rebuilder?
I realized you said three years, and a common warranty for something like this might be one year, but it might be worth a phone call. Especially if the company or person knows of something you can do your self inside the instrument.
