Speedometer cable specification for ZF Transmission install

Hi All,

After installing a ZF tranny in my rig, my speedo cable was too short, and needed a new one.

Old configuration: 1973 sport, 302, C4 Transmission, 70" speedo cable, black speedo gear.

New configuration: 1973 Sport, 302, ZF Transmission, 82" speedo cable, black speedo gear. (the speedo gear needs to be changed to accommodate my 33" tires and 4.11 gears - a future task)

The adapter that connects the Dana 20 transfer case to the ZF Transmission is 2.25" thick from surface to surface. You can see my install at http://www.kokes.net/bronco/zf_trans.htm

The Napa part number for the 82" speedometer cable is: 615-1646. It was a direct bolt-in replacement and no modifications were needed, and the length was adequate without having any excess. The ONLY difference was the attachment nut on the speedometer side. The old 70" cable had a hex nut, and the new 82" cable had a textured finger-tighten nut.

Hope this helps someone.

Ben,

Great article thanks -- I'm considering doing this (doing a frame-off resto on a '68). The link within your article to Joe's page was dead when I tried it (I didn't even know prodigy was still around). Did it work for you recently? Would be great if you morphed his content into yours as you suggested.

Thanks,

Jon

Jon,
I don't have the link. Maybe Google has a cache of it. Do you have the URL?

Thanks,

Bringing up an old thread.
Found a cross to the Napa 615-1646 speedometer cable and thought I would put it here for future searches.

Pioneer Automotive Products CA-3010. I got it at the local O'Reilly's for 14.99 compared to a current cost of 26.89 for the Napa. You can also get it at rockauto and Autozone. The ends match the stock cable and the length is about 80 inches. There are several applications but I used '82 Bronco with 5.0. It doesn't come with the firewall seal and the gauge end is a knurled nut instead of hex. You have to reuse the oring on the D20 end. I'll be installing it this weekend but won't know if it works for awhile. I'm in the middle of a Centech install and decided to replace the speedometer cable while I run the rear harness.

Well I would normally just have said to let me know and I'd bring one home with me. ;)
And then I could have borrowed the crimpers back at the same time! ;D

But that is a good price and if it's in stock, no time lost.
Still, if someone needs one and is ordering other items from us anyway, I'm glad we have them in stock normally so we can still be a good source.

How's that harness coming? Fired it up yet?
Using the crimpers Sunday by any chance? Hoping to get over to Steve's for a couple of hours.

All we did on My Mazda (same length) install was loosen up the clamp on the bottom of the body and put the cable through a lower hole ( I drilled it just below the original hole) in the fire wall and it was long enough to reach. Hope this saves all some time and money
