starting issue

I went to start my 77 Bronco earlier this week. I turn the key to run and hear my electric fuel pump turn on as usual. I turn the key to start it and nothing happens. I am able to start the bronco by jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver so I assumed my problem was the solenoid. I changed that and still have the same problem. Any ideas? Is the ignition? Since the electric fuel pump is kicking on as usual I assumed that was not the issue.

Thanks!

It is automatic. Where is the neutral safety switch? Is there a way to test it to see if that is my problem?

It’s on the left side of the transmission. It is a combination safety switch and reverse light switch. It could be bad or might need adjusting. Try moving the shift lever while you are trying to start it. If it starts then the switch needs adjusting.

If you want to try to adjust it this thread should help. https://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=274538

You can also bypass it by jumping the wires together at the safety switch. I believe they are blue and red. The other two wires are for the reverse lights. All four of those wires for the neutral safety/reverse light switch are in a 4 wire plug between the firewall and the drivers side valve cover.
Be careful jumping those wires. It can crank while in gear...

Looks like that is my problem but not sure how much safety it is providing. Shifted into reverse and it cranked right up. Thank you for the input.

Right test Specklebelly. Wrong conclusion, as you found out.
Because you could jumper the relay/solenoid you proved that it still worked. In that case it means that it is not getting it's signal to start over the small Red w/blue wire on the "S" terminal from the ignition switch and through through the neutral safety switch.

Keep the old starter relay as a spare though. Newer ones are notorious for failing quickly unless you happened to get a Motorcraft or perhaps one still made in the US.
