Suggestions on a quiet muffler

I have headers and the summit turbos.

I think they sound a little rough. I will go with something quieter once I get around to it.

Although, they are very quiet at idle

I just looked up your muffler it is a 4 inch wide body

I have the 12616 which is a 6 inch wide body. I am very happy with mine, and to me it is fairlly quiet when cruising, but when I punch it it sounds awesome. To me it is the best of both worlds, and I am sure it is a lot quiter than your muffler.

It still tucks in very well

I've herd that running a crossover will quiet a set of duals. Is that true?

Should be smoother, less brappy and more low-end torque. I'm a firm believer in full duals with a crossover although the Cougar has no crossover so it sounds more 60s-ish....as it should! ;D

I'll never buy into this "Super Single" fad unless you are willing to sacrifice performance for ground clearance....if you do, that's fine but don't buy into the no performance sacrifice I've heard unless you never drive over 40 mph...and even then that may not be valid. :p Ford small blocks do very well if you open up the exhaust....If anyone disagrees, I wanna see some torque curves.

Need to look at the BC torque curves. I don't beleive for a minute that the 302 or the 5.0 loses much if any going from a true dual to a 2 into 1.

spintech - dual 2 1/2" in, single 3" out - exits to the rear. It's a good size box though - nice rumble, not annoying - but amps up when you stand on it. It's on the spendy end of the scale, but only had to buy it once.

I agree, and I am looking at the cruiser series, real compact with good sound.

I could not wait for my summit turbos to get a rust spot on one of them, out they came , too loud and replaced them with ( I told the muffler guy as close to stock as possible ) two Long oval shaped mufflers attached to my stock size tubes and manifolds. Gotta love listening to the game on my way home at a light.
The sound of a well built engine beats the shit out of any phony , "look at me" exhaust.Which seems to have spread into the Diesel truck "Look at me" market%)

So, wher'e the most effective place to put the crossover? I'll need enough room for flanges to pull it out for trandmission work etc. Is a simple "H" pipe sufficient?

True dual flowmaster 50s, best of both worlds to me. Min. IR and great sound when you want it.

I went thru this also when I 1st got it running it still had th PO EXHAUST FROM THE 70's on it too loud took it to the muffler shop I said I want a better exhaust ...wrong words ...When I picked it up it was cheap turbos and dualed out and still loud ..I drove it about a month... Hate'ed it ...took it back said I want it singled out and very quite so I can hunt out of it ..He put on a take off muffler and it is quite now ...
...But I'm about to put in a 4BT AND I'M sacred that it'll be way too loud ...

I went with Magnaflows when I redid my exhaust and I am very pleased with them. I got the 5"x8" oval with the 18" long case, which would be longer and quieter than the 14" you pointed out. They tuck up under the body very well and sound really good. They are not loud at all unless you really romp on the throttle, then you hear them. I don't think they are very loud on the highway, but with all the road noise, it is hard to tell.

I've got Duff's long tubes running into 2 1/2" then into 2 stock type round mufflers and 2 1/2" back out exiting behind the rear tires. Nice & quiet until I get into it, and then a very pleasant rumble. With the soft top all buttoned up I can barely hear it when idling; almost silent with the hard top on. I went this route after having dual turbo-type mufflers and didn't notice any performance or mileage dropoff despite what the "exhaust technician" predicted, just a nice, much quieter ride. My biggest reason wasn't my ears, but I got tired of waking up the family every time I left early in the Bronco and hearing about it later......

Spintech muffler

I have long tube headers, a 2 into 1 transition, and a single 3" muffler. I first tried a Magnaflow....much too loud. Next I tried a 3" Dynomax turbo...quiet at idle, but had a resonance at highway speed. I ended up with a Spintech. It is a bit louder than the turbo at idle, but at constant throttle opening on the highway, it is quieter than anything else I have tried.

I have dual hushpower II s. They tuck up out of the way nicely but they have some growl for sure! They are a little too loud for my taste but I am stuck with them for a while.

Just get a longer oval Magnaflow. I am running about the longest Magnaflow they make. Its pretty quiet most of the time. You can talk cruising, but if I get on it, it will make noise...as you would want.

I think I'm going to go the PAPITT route and get a take off from a newish truck and go as quiet as possible. For me, its a bronco, that's all it takes to get attention. I have dual turbos on my 73 with wildhorses long tube headers and it sounds real nice, not too loud, until you're 4 hours into a trail ride and the reverb into the cab crossing water for the 10th time pounds on your brain, but good for the street...I think I just want a little more peaceful trail ride.

I had a super single last time mine ran. It was easily 10" diameter by 24" long. 3" outlet and sounded awesome. Very hollow and deep like a Borla. At idle, you could tell there was a healthy cammed motor in there, but no head pounding drone at highway speeds, in fact it was pretty quiet in the cab. Get into the 4bbl and it would get you noticed, but not obnoxious. I wish I knew the make of the muffler, but can't remember off hand right now. It sounds like the bigger mufflers make the difference in decibals and droning at highway speeds.

I think I'm going the same route this time around except using a dual 3" out if possible. Summit has some in 24" I think.
