Have a stock 302 on my 71 and want to get rid of the points. What is the most cost effective but correct route to go. I was thinking of a Pertnonix Ignitor. Thanks!

I would go the Duraskark route. It can all be found for the price of those drop in kits and its all OEM. I found a used igition box for super cheap and got a rebuilt distributor off of Rock Auto. You can reuse the same cap and rotor from your distributor. The later larger caps eliminated some cross fire issues as I understand it, but mine runs fine with the older style. There a slew of threads on here for wiring it up.

I have used Petronix on several older vehicles to replace the points. I have had "0" issues with them. Each time I changed over it seemed as though they ran better. Not a night and day difference but noticeable. That being said, on the motor I'm putting in my Bronco, I am going to use the Duraspark because I'm trying to use as many Ford parts as is practical for me

if you must go pertronics make sure you get pertronics II and keep your points and condenser in the truck for back-up for ever. never leave your key on without the engine running.

Hi, the Pertronix Igniter is a great choice. Pair it with the Flamethrower coil. You will have to feed the new coil and igniter with a twelve volt wire, key on only of course, or remove the pink (I think) resistor wire under the dash.
Pertronix now has three different levels of the Igniter . I would choose #2 for my Bronco, #3 seems like overkill.
By the way, I see you bypassed the vacuum retard on the vacuum advance can. Many guys feel the inner nipple should be left open so the diaphragm can be free to move in response to engine vacuum.
Good luck

Duraspark is the obvious answer. It's far more reliable than any after market system and is EB original. Just make sure you get a real Motorcraft module. The after market modules are the cause of most all the complaints.

I went with Pertronix Igniter and Flamethrower coil. Ran much better (my old coil might have been bad) and provided me with years of zero issues. Would have swapped it into my current engine but was not compatible with my explorer motor so I switched to a HEI unit.

Why would you want to eliminate the points and condenser? Your Bronco will be the only vehicle that runs when North Korea detonates an EMP weapon over NYC...:)

Duraspark worked well for me until I went EFI.

I went to purchase the duraspark at Jegs and they said I have to rewire everything since I don't have a duraspark ignition. Have any of you ran into that problem and how do you hook it up? Thanks.

Ditto, its a great Mod! I will say it was a night and day difference for my rig. Well worth it.

There is some wiring but its not bad. You can find a used harness or make your own. The parts houses carry the factory plugs. I don't have part numbers for those but I remember reading them in various threads on here. You can also just Google duraspark conversion and lots of other sources pop up on the interweb as its a common old Ford mod.

I've been using an Accel module for years, works great. Model 2020. The are around $75 now but occasionally I'd find them for $25 and snatched up a couple extra to have as spares.

I went with a Pertronix in my other vehicle and am happy with it. I like that it is self contained. Been in there for several years with no problems but I carry a spare just in case. I will add one to my Bronco at some point.

I got a Crane ignition module (similar to pertronix) many years ago and have never had an issue with it. I think it is the Crane XR-1. I do not think they make it any more.

MSD ready to run distributor and MSD coil.

The problem with these so called "ready to run" distributors is, they aren't really "ready to run.'
Until you put the distributor on a distributor machine, and set the vacuum and mechanical advance, you're not done.
The cam and ignition advance has to work together, or you'll be leaving performance on the table.
And why would you settle for less after spending so much to get here?
