Thanks for the info James. They sound like they could be interesting to play around with. I have never seen a set around here. Do you have to get lucky to find them?
Bax

They come up on pirates often enough you can find them if you want them. Most guys on that board are west coast though so shipping would be killer.

The 404's are old, most from the 60's. Due to their popularity and the fact very few were made compared to say 1 ton ford pickups, they are getting like D60's were several years ago. I'd guess you could score a set (or whole beat to crap 404 mog) these days cheaper due to many giving up on the hobby due to gas prices.

If I were going to do mog 9's, I'd just find a set of 406/409's with disks and start with them. Portal boxes will be no problem

(406 left, 404 right)

and they come with disks already (although the disks are 15 inch slabs of steel that look more like a flywheel, you can cut them down and run a std truck type caliper and get 16.5 H1's to fit).

Hey Bax, I've read that they are rated at 1.5 ton axles. But OX may be right at the 1.25 ton rating. I really like my 404!

Other than the unimog axles, What other parts would have value on this rig?

Did you get it?

Not yet.

Playing out my options, There is an opportunity lingering. Tow guy is set, got a yard with a 20' dumpster that needs to be filled with steel scrap, I still need permission for use of the forklift and cutting torch. I got 2 willing helpers on Labor day.
It's one of those things that all parties involved needs to come through and it can happen.

Unimog chop shop

Just another Sunday with a blue-tip wrench, a forklift and a 20' steel scrap container...... And of course Taz and his cousin Justin..
An EZ pop up, a couple chairs, a folding table, cooler full of Hawaiian punch and a boom box... This is what we did today...

WHOO HOOOO!!! Now what are you going to do with them? :p
Pat, I'll do something like the rear axle in your build but it's not going to be right away.
Maybe do a hybrid mog/9" for the front also.

Do I need to flip the 9" 3rd member if I use it in the front with the mog ends?
