Warn 8274 mounting ideas

I have a Warn 8274 I removed from the 79 I just sold. The '76 has a winch mount on the front bumper, but it will only work for a typical bottom mount winch.

I thought about trying to make an adapter plate of sorts but am afraid it will look like ass, or worse, fail. Any ideas short of making a complete new bumper?

Based on the bumper design, it looks like it would be fairly easy to make a vertical mounting plate with some triangular gussets down the side to accommodate the 8274 and keep things nice and rigid. I'd be tempted to completely remove the bottom mount that's already there just to keep things as clean as possible, but you might be able to incorporate it into some sort of design.

I have seen adapter mounting plates. I also have a good 8174 that I was considering using and I found some professional made adapters that really are just some larger size angle iron with holes in the horizontal plane to match your bumper and holes in the vertical direction for the 8274 and a couple gussets on the sides for increased strength. Can't remember who was selling it, but look around because I know you can buy one already made. Also would not be to hard to fab that up yourself either.

This is what I did. I just had a 3 by 5 square tube bumper to start with. I welded a 2" reciever in the middle , but you wouldn't need to do that part. The mount I made with 1/4 plate. I have access to a plasma cutter so I was able to put the "W" in it and the handles on the side. I ve got a quick connect deal for the 12 volt so I can remove the thing(heavy!) and take it to the back. I hope this can help.

Warn makes a 8274 mounting plate that will bolt to a 2X4 piece of tubing mounted in each frame rails. Here are a couple pics. I paid less than $100 for it from a local Jeep shop that sells Warn, had to special order.
