Thanks for all the suggestions. Does the EB start better with the ignition upgrade such as Petronix, Duraspark, etc? What are the benefits other than not having to change points. Does your motor run cleaner? More power? Thanks Much,

Mnky..I am putting it on the orange trailmobile I hope.

Go with the Duraspark dizzy & spend what you save on a gigavolt coil. Distributors are just triggers. The coil is where the performance comes from.

Mine does start easier with the Crane XR-i. Before, with points and timing set at factory specs, it would turn over quite a few times before catching. With the Crane setup, I pump the gas twice, pull the choke just like before but now it catches almost the instant I turn the key.

I use a stock Duraspark distributor, Jacobs 1000 CD box to fire a stock E-core coil from a Bronco II. I have had very good luck with the stock ford coils, see many 80's vehicle in the junkyards that still have the original coil on them, good thing.
Distributor is for something out of the 70's that I made up at the parts store (usuall for me).
Jacobs box is good and has the best reputation that I have found. Didn't like the fact that MSD is so failure prone that in NASCAR they mount 2 of them and put a switch so they can change from one ignition to another without having to stop. MSD makes all the parts to do it too. Not that impressed with a company that makes kits to replace broken parts faster then to simply build a better part. Kind of like picking up a new eletric fuel pump and getting a rebuild kit because you know you will need it. I would rather just get good stuff to begine with.

Passed on pertronix after hearing of several units fail and the cost involved.

I have the Pertronix unit and:

1. It starts almost instantaneously.
2. Runs much smoother, even during warmup.
3. Plugs seem to last much longer (Haven't changed in
at least 10k miles. With points I was lucky to get 7k miles.)

I bought the still available original Pertronix kit. Though my points are in the glove box in case it konks out on me, I have thought of just buying another original Pertronix unit to have on hand. That would put my cost at somewhere near $170 for both. I've been running the original now for more than 2 years with no indications that it's about to "die". So, I figure it's been worth the money for all the usual reasons. One must also remember that you don't need a different distributor (or even a different coil or plug wires) and you don't have a box you have to mount somewhere with the attendant wires to deal with.

Just my 2 cents. ;)
