What oil filter do I need?

They're a very common filter size. Ford must have used these on many of their engine sizes back in the day. I think even my old Pinto 2000cc used this size. Purolator 30001 is another option.

What wrong with the PH8A? I have used that Fram filter in every 302/289 I have had and never had an engine failure! Actually I have used Fram filters in every car/truck I have had and alot of them have had well over 100K miles and no internal engine problems.

especially the recommendations!

Personally I would run about any of the filters (That Fram high mileage spooks me).
As long as you change the oil fairly often you almost don't even need a filter. In other motoer vehicles I deal with people are taking out the paper filter and using a cleanable stainless mesh.

I have seen way too many cases of oil left in way too long, allowed to run low, etc. over the past 20 years I have been working on vehilces. Never seen a filter failure. Never known anyone who has had a failure first hand. Handful of friend of a friend heard about someone who had one fail stories as well. No good sources of any failures.

IF there were a bunch of failures there would be tons of info, pictures, blogs, forwarded horror stories about it going on. I can find better resources that Bush intentionally crashed the economy to make the Democrates look bad then I can find about bad oil filters.

Figure that it is a high volume, low cost item. I am sure that failures have occured. But the number of failures vs. the amount of product in the market? The bigger the name, the more there will be, simply because there is more out there.

I have run Fram on everything for years. 200k+ is common. Engine related failures have never been lubrication related. Usually I scrap the vehicle, still running just fine. Just too many other things failing to spend the money repairing. Sinking $3k into a vehicle that will never be worth $2k just does not make finincial sense.

X2 on what broncobowsher said.
I've run fram with zero issues thats all I ran on my 73 and at 177,000 miles when I tore it down for a rebuild the crank was still like new didnt need to be reground just polished it up. So with 300,000 miles on the crank with standard sized bearings the fram fliters cant be all that bad. Nowadays I also use the motorcraft ones as well all depends on whats in stock when its time to change the oil.

I agree with most on here ans say that regular oil changes are far more important than oil filter brand. However, I will never run a fram on any of my vehicles. I spent 3 months cutting open every single oil filter I could get my hands on and found about 60% of the fram had a good sized hole through the filter element. The WIX filters were almost as bad. It was pretty much every type of fram as well. The "nicer" frams had a little more filter element to them but not much. Plus most of the frams have the filter element capped with cardboard! After doing this for that long (around 400 filters!) I run either a K&N or Mobil 1 in my wifes car and STP in all my other cars. The STP was probably the best looking cheap filter out there. The K&N and Mobil 1 were probably the best looking filters period.

I used Fram in all my vehicles for years with no problems. But running an external oil filter in my old VW's I had two burst. They are not the made by the same company anymore and I have switched to K&N. They have the highest burst strength and filtration available at present. Nothing wrong with Puralator, Motorcraft, Hastings, all good filters. I accepted one failure, but after two, no way.

I used to buy Fram filters before I stumbled onto that site:eek: Pep Boys' Pro Line filters are actually Purolators and are a great deal for the price. I did some research and found that Walmart's Super Tech filters are excellent quality filters and very inexpensive.....I've been using them for some time now as well as their Super Tech synthetic oil, also very good stuff!--------Hans

OK Here's my story ...I ran and had a parts house since 1967 ..When I started we sold Fram so I've sold a bunch of them ..I Had several Frams burst or blow up ...look like a round ball... As I say if the filter sets on the motor in an upright position then there is no problem with a Fram ...BUT if it set on the motor on it's side ...AKA our Bronco 302 ..Then as a fram sets there it drains back all the oil ...Unless they have changed their design it has NO DRAIN BACK VALVE IN IT ..This might be the diff. between the PH8 & PH8A ..I don't know ..But also the frams paper was glue to the caps top & bottom ...Where the Wix ..was crimped to the top and bottom & the paper in the Wix was heat treated paper ...It can last over 10,000 miles ..& there is more footage of paper in the Wix...
...At the end I got to selling ...Wix ..AC.. MOTORCRAFTS ..my Parts Plus which were purealater I think ..and some STP...Just out of a deal from some wearhouse ...
...............................
I was surprised to hear one of the poster say the wix paper had a hole in it ..Because thats what we told on the Frams.....I had the cut filter display on my counter ..

I popped 2 PH8's on a VW engine in less than 25 miles! The first one only lasted about 3 miles, the second about 12. The first one balooned and started spraying oil from the sealing surface, thought it was a fluke so I put another one on, the second one burst at the seam on the side of the filter.

I've run Bosch filters on every car since. And never had any problems.

I have never had a engine failure because of a oil filter have any of you? My only engine failures have been cooling failures not oiling failures! My point is does the oil filter really matter?

I had the same issues back when I was into VWs. When running a full flow filter, it comes right off the pump, through the filter and back to the case's main oil gallery which has a pressure bypass valve. Problem was the filter was getting full pump pressure, which can get pretty high. Fram HP-1 filters were recommended for full flow systems because they had a heavier duty casing---------Hans
