Just a guess. Maybe it was for a bell to hang down so they would know if a rock was in the way.

Two with the same thing? Interesting.
Where does the inner end attach? The most common use of chains in the old days was as a hood lock. But those were usually more robust and were obviously long enough to reach the latch area.

The cow bell is a great suggestion langester. We used to try to figure out all sorts of places to put those things.

Sorry Mike. Never seen one like that before, so no help from here.
Be great of we hear from someone that's done the same thing.

I don't suppose you bought your two Broncos from the same people? And can still find them to ask?

I haven't removed it because I though there was some interesting use for it. It was just put their to confuse me I guess. I'll keep it on for a conversational piece.

Maybe a ground for a CB when your parked? If un-clipped do they reach the ground?

Previous owner maybe on the short side... used them as stirrups to see the motor... no clue actually!

How else are you suppose to attach your horse to a hitching post?
