Color, axle, and trans such should be on the VIN tag, but not in the actual VIN #. Should be on the drivers kick panel on a '66.

I think late '66 might not have eyebrows, not sure.

How can you tell, which number are you looking at thought all 6 numbers were build date?

Yes you're correct, my brain not functioning this morning. As stated above, color code is at the bottom of VIN badge. Sorry about that.

Your bronco is too late for the eyebrow grill. There should be a tag on the left side kick panel that has the build codes. Your VIN suggest that your Bronco was built in March of 1966 in Michigan with a 170 6 cylinder engines.

I can make out the DSO 25= Richmond, the tranny C=3-speed, the A3? which is the rear gear, but not sure what gear that is. Not sure what the 092 is, or the 798. The color mystery continues I guess.

It shouldn't be a mystery but it is. I'm hoping someone chimes in that knows exactly how to read a vin tag. Thanks.

It appears your color code is missing, here is my early '66 VIN tag. I'm fairly sure the color code is between the number I think is wheelbase (092) and Model (U14)

X2, I didn't realize there was a difference in badges between the years. My 71' is a little more straight forward. I see that the 092 is the wheelbase inches.
That would leave the 798 the mystery number.

photobucket-33587-1347376527881.jpg

U15FL790290= U15 (wagon) F= engine code for 170CI inline 6 cylinder L= Michigan Plant
092= 92"wheel base
L= paint code for Holly Green
U150=model code for wagon with 3900lbs GVW
798= The 7 is unsure books show 1 as silver vinyl interior and 98 as body code for wagon (long roof) (All 66 had silver vinyl interior)
C= 3 speed manual shift
03= 4:11 open diferential 2780lbs axle
24= destination code for Jacksonville

What type of seat arrangement does it have? Front bench, dual buckets, drivers only bucket, rear seat? I am thinking that the 7 is dual front bucket seats, 6 is for drivers side only bucket seat and 1 is for bench seat.
Does it still have the "buck tag" that hung on the fire wall?
This was a post from another CBer.

The 092 is for 92" wheel base. The color code should have been right after that. It was obviously omitted? The 798 stands for 7= bucket seats and 98= long roof or fulll top. The A3 axle code is odd too. O3 is the standard 4:11 2780lb rear axle. There was an A5 for 4:11 LS 3300lb and an A6 for the same with 4:57. My best guess is that A3 would be 4:11 LS 2780lb.
Can get a picture of some where that still has the original paint?

Best pic I got was from right around the tag=looks like a dark blue to me but there is also gray in the engine compartment and currently / recently painted Brown. Must be a reason paint letter was omitted.

Color code is not shown. Typically that was special order. Could be any color.

A3 is 2780 lb (light duty, small bearing, 10" brake) rear axle with trac-lok and 4.11 gears.

Front buckets only. No rear seat.

25 is DSO code. Looks like Richmond area.

Thanks to all so the color code simply is not there on the tag.
