Where do you put your portable winch?

Now that I have body lift, was thinking of mounting a 9K
Ramsey I have permanently up front. That was until I saw
the rear seat track thread.

I'm now thinking of using my 9.5K Warn portable that I
normally run on the 79 wheeler. Would make the front much
cleaner, the other 95% of the time I'm not wheeling and allow
a rear receiver too. I already have full front/rear wiring set up
and an inside winch mount from my mudding days.

Now where to put it. Could flip up rear seat, put tool box on
tracks and slide that forward, or make a rack, kind of like this, but
less beefy, just to hold winch over tool box.

Or put box up higher permanently,
but that makes it look stupid with a bikini or my half
cab soft top. Box on top would be better, as then you can get
into it without moving winch.

Space in a Bronco is so limited. I've known a few that store the winch on the front bumper.

I've seen receivers mounted vertically in the bed to hold the portable winch. Be careful that it's not hard to access when you're at a 50 degree off-camber incline when decide you need to mount the winch!!

Can you mount it inside on the tailgate? Just flip the tailgate down to access the winch? Also keep in mind that 9.5K winches are heavy!

Cavin out of AR has a winch mount on a receiver hitch...

Plug it in front or rear when needed.. Pretty slick

I keep it installed on the front unless I need to move it to the rear or to another vehicle.
In the summer it stays in the shop most of the time when I have no reason to have it on the truck.

Ditto...mine can go from truck, to car carrier, to bronco in just a few minuets.
For some reason the winch gets heavier every year!

Same for me. I also welded a receiver tube vertically to my tow bar, so the winch rides there when I'm flat-towing the Bronco (it can't be in the front receiver with the tow bar on, and I can't swing the tire carrier closed when it's in the rear receiver).

Mine sticks out way too far to really leave it there for even mild wheeling.

Really don't have any floor space left, which I'd guess many are in
the same boat. Hence why I was thinking of tubing up and over rear tool
box, maybe mounted to roll bar in each side. Since my tool box is lower
than seat, might be better to raise that and put winch underneath.

Now that I see what you're working with, I agree. Raise the tool box and store the winch under it. Build a platform for the box which incorporates a receiver on a sliding mechanism that allows the winch to be pulled out over the open tailgate. Stores the winch out of site and give you easier access to the tool box. A win-win! Part of the sliding mechanism can extend under the seat so it's long enough to move the winch out all the way onto the tailgate.

If you want to get fancy, hook up a lever attached to he tailgate that pulls the winch out onto the tailgate when you open the tailgate! ;D:cool:

I looked at it again tonight. As nice an idea as it was. I think I'm back
to just putting the 9K Ramsey up front. My portable setup is the old
XD9000i, which has that "tower" over the winch with the solenoids in it.
It's way taller than anything else, vice maybe an 8274. ;D

And behind the box, I forgot I left a space to store upper part of 2 piece soft doors.
I made a case for them and they fit nice there.

I was at NEClassics this weekend and grabbed another used chrome bumper
that's "good enough". Will save my nice one's from being hacked up at least.
