Hey folks that have D60s with 5 on 5.5 pattern, which method did you use to get to 5 on 5.5 and are you running 35 spline outers?

I am running the dana 60 stock dual piston calipers and stock dana 60 rotors as I am running 17 inch wheels. I am still on the stock 30 spline outers but as soon as one fails I will upgrade to 35 spline.

I have a 91 D60 KP axle from inner C to inner C and am trying to decide which route to go with knuckles/spindles/hubs. I dont need the 1 ton brakes, especially with hydroboost and would like to run the 15" wheels I have.

the rotors have enough material to redrill them to the 5x5.5 pattern?

Right now Tito, Im running 1/2 rotors and chebby brakes....

And a follow up question...anyone have leftover D60 stuff? (spindles/hubs...knuckles ;D )?

I am not dead set on 5 lug honestly, I just figure this is the point in time that i should decide before spending money on other stuff. Cheapest route probably is to run the 8 and a trimmed 14blt in the rear. I just would like to run my NIB Challengers ;D I guess I'd trade for some Walker Evans ;D Man I wish Don had gotten that mass buy going.

Iam in the process of going with a full width dana 60 front and a 14 bolt rear. I bought front caliper mounts from BlackBird Customs. So I can run 15 inch wheels. I have not got to the front end yet to see how it is going to turn out with those brackets. I was in the same debate about the lug pattern as you. But then decided to go with the 8 lug.

Cheaper to upgrade before one breaks. When a 30
spline goes it usually splits taking out the spindle,
hub nuts, bearings, etc... I've seen some that
require torching just to remove.

Now, someone correct me if I am wrong but will the D44 spindle, caliper bracket, and rotor all mount up to the outside of a Ford D60 knuckle? I know this would limit you to 30 spline outers. Sounds like the FF rear axle hubs from warn (30 spline) will work in the front according to the Billavista article.

I know that isnt as hardcore as I would like to go but its a definitely upgrade, especially in the U-joint. And I have all the pieces.

If you're going to do all that, why not run a 35 spline ARB in a RC D44 and mate the D60 parts to the outside?

Anyway, I'm in the process of doing a tech article on this, but it'll be a few more weeks till it's done.

In the meantime, the D44 spindle/caliper bracket will bolt up, but there's about an 1/8" of extra space on the outside, so you lose some strength there as the parts WILL move around under load. I would not go that route.

About the least expensive way to go is to machine down the outside of the D60 hub, as well as a bit of the back, so it fits in your wheels and will allow the D44 rotor to fit up in back, and redrill the 5x5.5 pattern. The big thing here, one of the holes needs to be welded closed so the new pattern can be drilled in. Then use a set of the caliper brackets designed to use the Chevy 1/2 ton calipers with the Ford setup. I'm also using the Blackbird Customs setup, but there are others.

Truthfully, there's a lot more support for the Chevy D60 5x5.5 setups, so if you're running a kingpin D60 put on Chevy outer knuckles, spindles, hubs, rotors, etc...

And I am running 35 spline outers as well. Running MM locking hubs on the street rig, Karnivore 35 spline drive slugs on the buggy.

Thanks Joe,
Can you do that to the HP44? I assume you have to grind the hell out of the D44 knuckle and C to get the U-joint to fit in there? Or do you have to replace the outer C's with 60 C's? I havent heard of anyone running a 35 spline 44 before, pretty cool if you can do it. I do plan to do the 60, just trying to get as much info as I can.

You have to replace the Cs and then run D60 stuff from there out. I thought about going that route on mine, but I already had the D60 and an ARB for it. Maybe a future build. The biggest issue is that the D44 isn't going to be as strong in the tubes as the D60, so if air-time is on the agenda, you'd have to at least brace the housing. You would be able to save @ 100-150# vs. the D60. Of course, a 9/60 does the same thing.

In theory you could keep the D44 inner/outer knuckle and open up the inner diameter to run the D60 sized spindle, thus allowing you to get axleshafts in/out. Unfortunately, the U-joint caps would be so close to the ball joints that you'd likely blow the ball joint if you broke an axle.

Here's what you do Josh;
You make me a hell of a deal on those M/T Challenger's, and I help find you a nice set of 8 lug wheels to replace them.................and no Walker Evans!!;D

I'll be more then happy to pay you $600 for them, and I swear to all things holy, if you ever get rid of them without contacting me first....................well lets just say I'd be very disappointed! ;)
