depends on whats wrong- u-joints, tie rod ends, brake job, bearings, seals, ball joints???
oil, grease, tools??

could be as easy as a tub of wb grease and two new seals $20-30, or a complete rebuild of the axle-$200-300.

And into the rabbit hole you go.......

Dope coming out means the axle seal is bad and thus you will need to pull the carrier and both axles to put the new one in. The seal is inside next to the carrier and is installed form the carrier area. I rebuild mine last summer and used a long rod and a seal driver to install them going in from D side to do P side and then P side to do D side.

You have the hardest and most expensive part of a gear change or carrier change open and laying in front of you. If you plan to do any upgrades (gears, axles, carrier) now is the time as it will save you money and time in the long run.

Dope? Is this an EB or drug mule?

At the bare minimum, it sounds like you need to go through and replace all of the seals and bearings. Along the way you could find that ball joints, tie-rod ends, locking hubs, rotors/calipers/pads, axles, etc all need repair and/or replacement.

I paid a local shop $390+tax to help rebuild my D44. That was 6 hrs shop time ($60/hr) plus misc shop supplies. I gave them the axle out of the vehicle, and all other parts cleaned and removed, plus a pile of new parts. They replaced the inner axle seals (which as noted above requires removing the carrier), outer seals, slingers. Removed and pressed in new ball joints and u-joints, spindle seals, pinion seal and front cover gasket. They reassembled everything, included the hubs and new calipers/pads and had it ready for me to put oil in and put under the car.

I think this was a pretty fair price to have a shop do it. I don't have a press so would've had to pay NAPA or someone to do the press work. Plus I was worried pulling and replacing the carrier might have been a bit beyond my expertise.

I didn't total up all the parts, but between the seals, u-joints, ball joints, calipers, pads, gaskets, oil, etc. it ended up being a pretty extensive (and expensive!) project.

If you sell the dope, you could easily have a shop rebuild it for you. What are we talking here? An 8 ball of meth, 1/2 pound of pot? Seriously WTF is this 'dope' your talking about?

Dope can be used to describe a lot of things..... when your trying to describe a leak on a vehicle, its not very specific so you pretty much have to expect a little ribbing.

If you have oil coming out of the axle tubes you have oil seals leaking, not a super difficult repair but your entire axle needs to come apart to replace the seal.

If you have grease slinging out like snot your outer seals are shot. These are the easiest to replace, and your bearings should probably be repacked anyhow.

If your talking about the outer seals you could do this job yourself with a few tools a manual and a YouTube video. If the inner seals need to be replaced you might want to have a shop or experienced buddy do the work. I'd guess you'd be looking at $400-600 in labor and probably 50-150 in parts for a mechanic to do the work.
