Engine and trans swap

I have a few questions about engine and trans swaps. I have a 1968 Bronco with a 302. Question #1 - is a 351 Windsor a bolt in swap? I know it is an inch or so higher than the 302. Question #2 about a trans swap. I have a 3 speed with overdrive from a 80s F150. This is not the cast-iron RUG trans. This is the later aluminum case T-170 RTS trans. I see an adapter output shaft available for the RUG when used in a Bronco. Does this same shaft also fit the T-170 RTS? Question #3. I also have a Mazda 5 speed from a F150. M50D from a 1995 F150. Has anyone tried to fit one into a 1st gen Bronco? If no adapter is available, I am wondering if the combo Mazda trans and transfer case could be swapped in?

I know theres a Mazda trans swap. Probably which ever one came in the ranger but it could've been f-150 trans. The 351w pretty much bolts in. You gotta find the right intake and air cleaner combo if you want to run a stock hood and no body lift.

I have a complete 1995 F150 I am scrapping and thus the question. It is 4WD, 302 engine, and Mazda 5 speed. Real nice shifting trans. I do not see it mentioned in any trans-swap discussions. I also have the aluminum top-loader 4 speed (3 speed with OD). I am trying to plan ahead. I asked about the 351 because I found it would not fit in my 1962 Falcon due to the extra height. Hopefully the Bronco has more clearance.

The M5ODR2 will bolt up to the 302 or 351W. It uses the same adaptors and such as the ZF so if you research ZF swaps you will find all kinds of info on doing this.

Pitfalls, the early M5ODr2's has the shifter location that interferes with the dash. The later versions have the shifter moved back like 2 inches. You can swap the covers from late to early and move the location or just bend the shifter slightly to clear the dash.

You have to use twin sticks on the D20

You have to install a hydraulic clutch

You have to get new driveshafts (front and rear)

The kit to install is about $1000 from BC

I have a later version M5ODR2 from a 99 F150 4.2L sitting in my shop waiting to go in. Once I find the time to do the project....the 4.2L kept the old SBF bolt pattern so it will mount up after you drill out a coupe holes in the trans for larger mounting bolts.

351W is a great swap. I suggest a 1 inch BL as it really helps with both the W ad M5ODR2 install. Your old body bushings are 40 years old and are pancaked so they need changing anyway. Might as well got 1 inch BL and it looks good on a Bronco.....Getting it all under the stock hood can be done (EFI or carb) using the right combo of parts.

Thanks. Great info. I am just getting ready to pull this 68 into my shop and start tearing it apart. It sat in a woods for 20 years and is in very rough shape. I bought a pair, 68 and a 72 that were sitting side by side. Going to make one from the two. I am trying to figure what combination of parts I want to use. I want overdrive for street driving. I have no plans of any severe rock climbing. I have a complete 1995 F150 4WD here with the Mazda trans. It shifts great, and thus my interest. I have no idea if it is the early or late model, as far as shifter position goes. I was originally thinking of tearing down the original 1968 302, rebuilding it and maybe even putting a stroker kit into it. But I just got a low miles 1996 351 Windsor with a factory roller cam for $300. So I am thinking it might be a good swap to use the 351W and maybe get rid of the factory EFI and convert to carb.

The factory EFI upper intake on the F150 will NOT fit under the hood be it 302 or 351. It will stick up like 6 inches.....

Explorer EFI is the best swap IMO. With the W you have 2 options on EFI intake. Use the stock lower with BC adaptor and Mustang upper (the SN95 intake sits lower than the other Mustang years) or find a Lightning lower (they sell for $600 and up) with Explorer upper. The Lightning lower and Explorer upper will fit under the hood if you use the right T-body and such. I just scooped my hood. I liked the look and the hood wasn't in good shape so it didn't bother me.

There is also a cast iron version of the lightning lower used on marine applications. It sells for about half the price as the Lightning. I run one.....

Hey John, I used the M5OD from a 1990 F250 and it works great. Highly recommend. The problem with the trans from the older Fords is the location of the shifter. It is too far forward so you have to cut the trans tunnel up through the brace. If you get the trans shift cover from a newer truck it is easy to modify to fit the older trans. That puts the shift hole in the middle of the trans tunnel. You can use the shift cover off of any M5OD whether it be a 2 or 4 wheel drive. I believe I got mine from a 2000 F150 2 wheel drive. They are pretty cheap at a junk yard. The first pic is the original location and the last pic is the newer cover. Shifts like butter.

I did the exact thing but with a 1993. Took the motor and transmission combo into a 1971 bronco. Things you will need:

1. Different intake for the 5.0. I used explorer upper and lower but mustang will work if you are going EFI. If carb then you can use the original intake/carb.

2. ZF transmission crossmember. I believe I got mine from BC broncos. Bolts right in same spot as original crossmember. Or fabricate your own.

3. Hydraulic clutch requires master cylinder and line from the donor truck. You will have to fabricate the rod and pivot onto your existing clutch pedal. Look up some of the zf threads for this. It isn't bad once you get it sorted.

4. I cut my shifter near the transmission, welded on some metal horizontal, and then welded the shifter back on. This moves the shifter back a coulpe of inches and everything is still hidden under the boot.

A couple questions as I’m about to do this swap behind a stock 289 in a 67

I’m gonna order the entire BC Kit

Questions

Will I use an original clutch, pressure plate and flywheel?

Will I use the original clutch pedal with modifications?

Noted above that a later 4.2 trans can be used for the swap, would it need to be a 4wd trans?

I already have a 95 f150 4wd trans

Thx

Yes you will use the original clutch pedal with a few easy modifications. The trans does need to be from a 4 wheel drive but your 95 trans will work. The shifter will be a little forward on the trans tunnel but you can retrofit a newer shifter housing to your trans and that can be from a 2 wheel drive.
