Holley Terminator X Max

Thinking about buying the Holley Terminator X max to control engine and trans instead of moving forward with the explorer stuff. Are there any downfalls besides the cost? It’s going on a 351W with Ed Curtis cam and heads around 330hp / 400tq at the wheels and trans is a 1999 4R70W. EFI guy is no longer doing power tuning due to EPA crack down on emissions and Decipha is really busy and hard to get in touch with. Thought this would be a good alternative. Let me know if anyone has had any experience with it. Thanks

I used it on my 408 with the 4R70W. Really liked it. Easy top work with and tune. I recommend it.

I wish I would have gone that route instead of the Pro FLow 4

what is wrong with the proflow 4?

I am currently building a 408 and the plan was to use the Pro Flow4.
better not ?
rather use the holy terminator x (max) ..

Very easy to tune and set up. They also have good support with their EFI Holley forum. I was also impressed with how well it controlled the 4R70W.

I did not use any professional help. Lots of available base tunes to start with. If it could control the 6R80 I would run it on my Coyote.

I really want to do coil packs instead of a distributor and you can’t do that with the pro flo 4 and it uses mostly ford factory parts for sensors and ignition where the pro flo is Edelbrock stuff.

Thanks for the advice, pretty sure this is the route I’m going. One more question though. Did you use factory coil packs or dual sync fizzy?

Ease of self tune would be my concern. The terminator are what most of the experienced tuners are recommending now as well as they are much more dialed in.

I actually used LS coil packs with a cam sync and also a crank trigger. Easier would be a dual sync dizzy with LS coils. I did that with my haltech and it worked great.

Did you go with an LS harness to use the coil packs or just wired them into Holley’s ford harness?

I'm planning to head down this path too with my 363W build. I think the price of the system is pretty attractive given that the Quick 4 has increased in price. I feel like I paid around $800 for the Quick 4 I have for my other F100 project - makes $1599 seem cheap given what you are getting!

One thing I've been wondering / searching for is how the Terminator handles 4low. I'll be taking speed signal from the transmission, so when in 4 low it's going to get confused unless there is a trigger to adjust the ground speed vs transmission speed. @rcmbronc did you run into this?

100% agree on the comments about it being the right system if you are looking to have someone else tune it for you!

I did not run into the issue at all. Interesting to think about. Not sure if it would matter as it would be regulating the trans from trans speed and the ground speed is never really an issue. I did not see any issue in 4 low but interesting to think on.

You should still be able to use the OSS in the transmission for input for shift points. Think of the OSS as a high resolution VSS. So much that I ran a stock ford cruise control off the VSS at one time. It worked, but the stock ford cruise control wasn't programmed for that much resolution. Shouldn't be an issue for the Holley as it is designed for a much wider range of universal signals.

If not getting a speed signal from the transfercase it will behave just like it is in 2 high in low range, the controller won't care. All of the Cheby stuff I do pulls speed signals from the transmission and work just fine in low range. All of the cheby stuff I do gets speed signals from the transmission only and are flawless.

Now that y'all are talking about it, I think the issues I was reading about were for the opposite problem - if someone is taking a vss reading from the output of the transfer case, then it's confused when in 4low. The only issue with pulling from the transmission is incorrect speedo/odo while in 4low. Probably a non issue for most!

Some OEM vehicles do pull speed from both the transmission and transfer case. Front drum/torque converter from the transmission and rear output from the transfercase. They have logic the does the math when the 4low indicator is turned on whether it be in the shifter or the transfercase. Only works with the correct logic for the transfer case gear ratio, if anything is different it fails to shift, may even go to limp. This is why you can buy transfercase adapters with speed sensors in them, not all 4x4 transmissions have an output speed sensor. A case of just because it bolts up doesn't mean it will work.

Does anyone know if the Holley Terminator X Max with the throttle body is able to control the 4r70w?
