• Be EXTREMELY cautious if someone offers to buy your Bronco for more than your asking price and sight unseen. ESPECIALLY if the buyer is overseas. It's probably a scam.

Maybe somewhere else would be a better fit. I wonder if BAT would even yield better results?
I doubt it. The highest sold price there for a roadster is $51K. Now granted, it was a '66 6 cylinder, but we're still looking at a big jump to get to $80K, or higher.

Good point. I regret selling my U13V8 because the journey would have been fun, however the restoration costs would have devastated me!

Hello all . . . .
I am back from Mecum Monterey.
you heard correct, to my disappointment, my 68 Roadster did not meet reserve.
In my opinion, not bad for Bronco pricing but unfortunately $80K was the highest bid in my particular auction moment of time.
I do not think this is the new 'benchmark' for Roadsters though, I agree with Fordfan, many factors played into the outcome of my particular auction. I will not blame it on the fact I was the 1st of the day but it sure didn't help, the MotorTrend TV crew didn't even start filming until the 3rd car of the morning and the crowd was at about 50% capacity during my roll across the red carpet. Some other stats of the auction weekend, I heard it was a let down to the Mecum crew based on attendance, lack of 'sold' cars with the large list of 'the bid goes on' being very very long with a low amount of sales compared to previous years.
As far as the value still on a 68 Roadster, mine being appraised by a very knowledgeable appraiser at $135-$155K, with an estimated sale price by the Mecum specialist at $115-$135K,
I still stand behind those appraisal values / estimates and agree with Trailerjack on the range of $125-$150K. Going back to 2019 a quality 67 'V8' Roadster sold for $115,500 and I believe Jeff Leslies sold for over $100K wasn't it? Not tooting my own horn but as Timmy / eaglenest66 mentioned in my Bronco Driver article, this 1968 Roadster is a very rare 'crown jewel' of the 3 year only factory produced Roadsters, I still would have to agree.
With all that being said, I am still alive, still had a great time, got to experience the auction, hang out with Andrew whom I don't get to see that much anymore, had a great time with my friends, family and my little guy Lucas who got to ride in the Bronco down the red carpet and across the block.
This 68 Roadster is now officially for sale and I am open to discuss the new ownership with whoever out there would like to enjoy it.
Thanks for all the thoughts and input in this particular thread leading up to the sale of my Roadster, the Bronco community is an awesome community : )

U13's get lots of attention and positive comments on BAT but always result in lower than expected prices imo. Just about have to find a private collector looking to fill a needed spot in his collection to make the kind of money they deserve.

I get it. I bought the one I have on BAT and really didnt need it but couldnt restore it for what I paid as they just dont bring the money. That said I love driving it and get a lot of compliments.

Was pretty close to my guess of 70-85k, rare and great looking Bronco. Just not the ideal Bronco from the big money crowd. IMHO Most of the life long Bronco guys aren't in the 100-250k market and would appreciate a patina Ranger with original interior way more than shiny paint and a coyote.

I did get some in country and out of country interest on my Roadster once parked out on the lawn in 'the bid goes on' section, I am waiting to hear what derives from those connections?
As much as I appreciate this site, I do think that a Bring a Trailer auction attempt is in my thoughts. I feel BaT could grab the attention of a non ClassicBroncos member, a newly interested party to the Roadster Bronco market, and possibly present the opportunity to a collector? I agree with Todd, the Roadster sales on BaT haven't shown much love in the way of pricing but I also feel there's a pretty strong difference in models with this 'V8' 68 vs the sold 6 cyl 66's. For lack of a better comparison, I would say its kinda like an original 289 Cobra selling for approx $800 - $1M where an original 427 Cobra sells for $1.5M and up. I guess we'll see if I end up going the BaT route?
I don't want to say anything negative about the Peacock Blue 66 Roadster or that Midnite blue 74 Ranger but if you were searching for quality, I would say hmmmm?
The scenario on the Peacock blue 66, it sold at Kissimmee just a few months back for $55K then they brought it to Monterey and re-sold it for $55K but the phone bidder who bought it Friday ditched Mecum, then Mecum oddly allowed it to re-enter the auction on Saturday and it re-sold for $44K.
the other pic is the field of 'no sales' under this particular tent, oddly they put the sold Roadster next to mine?

If BaT will agree to your reserve, then I'd say go for it!

I"ll chime in here. Had a great time seeing Bobby and the Roadster again and also one of my oldest Bronco buddies Dave H and his daughter. I'll say that having the first spot of the day was not beneficial..... There was almost no one in the tent when the Bronco went through, compared to 2 hours later when I had to snake my way back in and then barely found a seat. One could argue that if you came there to buy that Roadster then, you'd have woken up.... but still the opportunity wasn't there because there was no one in the tent - law of averages; someone would have gotten interested, especially when compared to the other Broncos there.

Not surprised it didnt sell. Not because it is not beautiful or worth the money, just because I saw the same thing at Mecum in Harrisburg. There seemed to be more no sales than sales and a bunch of really nice and unique cars didnt meet reserve. Most of the broncos did sell but I think one or two that didnt were not nearly the quality of yours. It was the year of Boss 302 mustangs up there, bunch of really nice restored and a few original cars and a lot of them did not meet reserve. I was really surprised.

I think the big tire, big engine, shinney paint bronco will get more attention and bring more money at these auctions. The people with deep pockets and have the wife, girlfriend or kids says "oh I like that we need to get it" will be much more attracted to non stock builds and drop stupid money just to make the family happy and piss off the guy next to him bidding. Your truck is really a niche truck for that die hard Ford/ Bronco collector most average bronco guys or people that know what it takes to make a truck that nice cant afford to drop over 100K on a truck that is too nice to drive. But there is a buyer for everything and now that its out there and is for sale I hope that person comes along and gives it a new home!

@ep67bro - true story and well said, I appreciate it.
I was fully amazed at the low priced sales and many many no sales.
as mentioned before, I did have a good time but just missing the cherry on top from what I took so much time and preparation and set out to do.
Andrew brought up a solid point on the law of averages and I agree with that empty room vs. a packed house, could of possibly had a way better result just with the fact of a quality Bronco being rolled in tight within all the hyped up flashy cars, not whining but just still disappointed.

anybody have a pair of 68 doors and a hardtop for sale, just kidding.
I will create an official ad soon for either here or Bring a Trailer but in the meantime, let me know if any of you have or know of anyone with interest?

Does BAT still write the sales ad for each vehicle? It would be nice if the owner had some control over that, it would save a lot of unwanted questions and comments during the BAT auction imo.

Looks like I was a bit low on my estimate. Even if the venue, auction timing, etc were not ideal, $80k is probably all it's worth, I doubt you would have better luck on BaT. Roadsters just don't bring big money, regardless of how nice it is. This is a great example that rarity does not increase value. I would argue that if this was a U15 with a 302/C4/PS/PB truck with this level of restoration detail, it may have gone for more. The WAF is really important with these trucks and roadsters don't have it.

They still write them - maybe get some seller input? I don't know...

Yes they write them based on their questions and the info you give to them. Sometimes it takes a little effort onthe comments to get across what you wanted to say.

BaT tends to plagiarize and or create a form letter based off the info you provide.
I like the ability to post 200+ photos or whatever you chose and to elaborate on any questions / comments that people have.
excellent platform in my opinion.

Has anybody ever dealt with selling a Bronco out of country? I have some strong interest on the Roadster from a business duo who were in Monterey from Uruguay, I'm a little concerned about the hassles and a little concerned about letting it leave our country? But I guess at the end of the day, its still on earth and it would be sold to somebody that wants and appreciates it. any info or thoughts on out of country sales?

I sold a Porsche a few years ago to a collector in Germany. I was super skeptical at first but we actually had numerous conversations via phone. He paid in cash and a few weeks later a company out of Houston contacted me, came and got the car and loaded it into a shipping container that went overseas. It was kind of a hassle, but also sort f interesting and fun at the same time. Car underwent full restoration and is now living its best life.

appreciate the words trailerjack, that sounds like a fairly easy task.
I actually remember now, I sold that 1957 Mercedes 180 to a guy in Germany and it was all on him setting up transport and it went smooth.
The Roadster is currently for sale on here but I will give Uruguay the opportunity and also planning to create a BaT ad.
thanks for the info

Not telling you something that you don't know, but I believe the Mecum contract has a continuation clause that allows them to market/sell the vehicle for a certain # of days following the auction. I recently had a friend who sold his car a week after one of their auctions and he had to get the car back due to Mecum selling it to a third party post sale. It became a real hassle for all involved.
