I would not go by color. I got lucky and my stickers were still on. I've had these for years. 6 ton orange in color model no. P38847 Made in China on the sticker

If in doubt swap them out......

Was just up at my neighbors and all 4 of his 6 ton are on the list.

Looked at the teeth, much more shallow than mine.

I had three pairs and just one set was on the recall, grey.

Took them in and had a gift card handed to me, which I used on the 12 ton models. I think I am all set.

Dear Doug,

Thank you for contacting Harbor Freight Tools.

For models 61196 and 61197 a label located on the base of the jack stands identifies the item by its model number.

For model 56371 a label located on the top of the jack stands identifies the item by its model number.

All jack stands with these model numbers are part of the recall. Any jack stands with any other model numbers are not part of the recall. All other jack stand item numbers have been investigated and determined to be safe for continued use.

For any further help you may want to present the jack stands to your local store for observation.

Best regards,

I'm 0 for 4 so far. Won't know the rest until I can dig them out of the pile, but so far all of my 3 and 6 ton stands are the wrong part number.
I'm not sure that's really a good thing though, until I check them for function.

My cogs are deep and the pawls seem to engage well, but I think I'll do some weight tests soon.
Some interesting videos on YouTube about it, with just as many theories as there are people. But while some of them don't seem to prove or disprove anything, a picture of the pawl and cog engagement of one of the bad ones would be cause for worry for anyone that was paying attention to their tools! The cogs were so shallow on one example I was surprised it would not be noticed even by the most cavalier or novice user.
But you know how that goes. I bet a lot of us pull them out of the box and put them under a truck without a second glance. I'm a semi-nervous Nellie and bet I've done it...

some of the videos have shown tapping on the release handle while under load . this is a good way to shear the roll pin that holds everything together it does not take much to damage it and may only be starting to shear. about like teasing a bull not a good idea

I saw some of those. And I've had non-Harbor Freight jack stands break their roll pins.
But to my mind that's actually a safety feature, not a fault. If you make the pin so robust that you could actually hit the handle hard enough to dislodge the pawl, I think that's a lot worse than the pin breaking and not being able to use the handle to release it.

The pin breaking does not release the pawl. The design is supposed to be that it's held in tightly by the weight on top. The more weight, the less likely it is to dislodge in use.

Took mine in. They gave me a gift card for the value of the jack stands. I then went and got the new 6 tons, I even had my 20% of coupon with me. They rang me up (same person who gave me the gift card) and my balance was $0.02. I almost went ape doo-doo. He quickly got 2 pennies out and I was on my way. Old gray ones and new red ones. The teeth are tiny on the gray. Never had any issues with them.

I found that same issue on a set of the 12 ton stands that I bought about 4 years ago.
I welded a big thick washer on the arm and another on the base so I can cinch it up with a turn buckle to keep a slight tension on the paw to keep it from walking.

Now that's a clever lock idea!

I saw one video recently where the guy described them as being only half their rating anyway, because their ratings are for "pairs" of stands. I find this idea ludicrous though, since you can buy them individually AND each one says what it's rated at.
Even someone who misinterprets any safety regulations due to a communication breakdown between languages would hopefully not plaster a false rating all over an individual component, simply because they can be used in pairs.

Anyone else ever hear that?

I got to thinking. If the jack/s give out and you are killed, well, that's the end of it.
But, what's worse is, if you are married and only injured...

Exactly why a big disability insurance is more important than life insurance

If you get killed your family loses your income

If you get seriously injured and disabled
Your family has lost your income and now has to still take care of you, change your diapers etc

I have a pair of gray ones with no label on them. JUST like the picture in the road and track article. What now??? I do have three other sets with a locking bar that goes through the frame and under one of the teeth to prevent any problems. Right now my triple axle 5th wheel toy hauler is sitting on 8 jack stands. Two of them are the gray ones mentioned. But the gray units are only under one of the axles not supporting the rig. Rig is supported by a pair of Goodyear 8toners and the front landing gear. BTW I didn't remove any labels from the units. Not sure if I ever kept the receipts.
