4R70W After thoughts

I thought I would write up a bit about the 4R70W swap I completed a couple of months ago now that I have a few hundred miles on it. BLUF: It's one of the best mods I have done on the Bronco. It did turn out to be a little more expensive than I thought but its ok in the end.
I bought a 99 Mercury Mountaineer transmission off of ebay for $250 without knowing much about it's condition or mileage. I was planning to rebuild it anyway so as long as the case and most hard parts were good then it didn't matter. I went into it with the idea that I was going to do other mods as well including twin sticks, gears, radiator and 3G alternator. I went from 4.10 to 4.56 gears as I thought they would work better with the transmission, and I am glad I did. I am running 35's on a 3.5" SL and 1" BL. I pulled the old C4 out and decided that I would modify the existing crossmember and build new brackets. Both of these jobs were pretty easy with only basic skills needed. I am using the AA adapter to bolt to the D20. When fitting the adapter to the crossmember, I did not need to expand the bolt holes like some people had mentioned. I modified original style poly mounts to fit the new adapter and the bolts lined up well. I made new crossmember brackets out of 3"x1/4"x8" long angle iron and used the original brackets to mark the frame bolt holes. The new transmission pushed the crossmember back about 1.5".

I tore the transmission down and found a couple of issues that are not uncommon in these. The outer 1-2 accumulator spring was broken. It only caused minor scoring in the sleeve that I was able to sand out using very fine grit. Finding new springs was difficult but ebay had some. The reverse drum tabs and the corresponding slots in the sun gear shell also had more wear than I liked so I got a rebuilt reverse drum and a new sun gear shell (magnetic). I ended up ordering the rebuilt kit and parts suggested by Transmission Bench. Their videos are also very helpful. I also got a complete new set of thrust bearings as sometimes they can be difficult to know for sure if they are good as well as a rebuilt torque converter. Following the videos and the instructions with the adapter, I reassembled the transmission, double and triple checking the order and air testing each drum. It's really not a difficult job, you just have to be clean and methodical.

I got the transmission in and then learned that I would need both new driveshafts, different headers (shorties), a column shifter adapter kit and an extended speedometer cable. There were also a number of small parts here and there that are needed. I made the cooling lines out of 3/8" Cu/Ni tubing and used the stock fittings in the transmission. There was enough room to make the bends clear of the exhaust. I decided on the US Shift controller for the transmission along with their TPS harness to work with the Holley Sniper. Wiring was fairly straight forward as I didn't need quite a number of wires that came with the controller. I drilled a hole in the front part of the tunnel to run the wiring through and there is probably 4-5' of extra wiring that I had to make room for under the dash but it wasn't bad. I could have cut the harnesses to shorten them but didn't trust myself to get them all back together correctly.

Open to any questions you may have, I will edit if I think of anything else to add.

The US Shift control is easy to program with their free software. The remote display that it comes with is smaller than I thought. I thought I would put it down near the bottom of the dashboard but I wouldn't have been able to see it so it's on the roll bar right in front of the steering wheel. Easy to see!

I also had to re-shim the rear pinion to get that angle right. Using 8 degree shims.

I have more questions than answers.
I appreciate you sharing your experience. This is something I've been considering for awhile. I know some will say to go with the 6R but I have the 4R and the computer to run it with the explorer motor. Yeah I know, I can't adjust the shift points the same.

I would love to find a atlas reasonable enough instead of going the adapter route.

You brought up a couple helpful things I hadn't seen addressed before. Thanks

You're welcome, let me know if you have any questions if you decide to go for it.

I do have a couple of questions... What headers did you have before and what about the 4R70W swap made you have to change them? Also, did you find any "gotcha's" using the Transmission Bench videos? My original plan for my Bronco was a new AX15, since I have a 3 speed now, but I have an entire 2001 Explorer so I may end up using the 4R as well. A few years ago, I bought a new/unused set of Jet-Hot coated Hedman long tubes from a member on here (he got it as part of a mass buy several years before) and wanted to use them in my build. And if I use the 4R, I plan to rebuild it using the Transmission Bench videos and one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2874220467...d=link&campid=5335857059&toolid=20001&mkevt=1 Not this particular one, I picked one up a while back for about $22

I had an older pair of Duff's ceramic headers. I am running a 351 so they may have worked with a 302, I don't know. It's really just the right side header that wouldn't fit.

As far as the videos, there were a couple of things. If you buy the kit through them you may have parts leftover that are never mentioned in the videos. He covers all years of 4R70W and there are a bunch of changes over the years of that transmission. When I first started it up after the install, it wouldn't shift into reverse. I called Jimmy at Transmission Bench and he said he had received a bunch of calls about that problem and that I would likely find the boost valve in the bottom of the pan. The boost valve gets replaced with one from the Sonnax Zip kit and for whatever reason, people were not installing the clip correctly. That's what happened on mine, pulled the valve body, replaced the boost valve and made sure the clip was installed correctly and it has worked great since/

That manual will likely come in super handy!

They have a new slightly larger display for sale. Also, you can trade in your old one for the new, but warning it's around $300-$350 dollars with your trade in.

Oh really? I just got it in April, maybe I should have waited a couple of months!

Hmm, maybe size is relative. It should have been available.
I spoke to them last year for the upgrade so it should be out now as well.

I have been accumulating parts for this swap.
I didn't realize you need an extended speedo cable.
What column shifter adapter kit did you use?

My speedometer cable was pretty tight so I decided to change it out. I have a 1" BL so that may have been why.

I used this shift adapter from WH: https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/aode-4r70w-automatic-shift-linkage-kit
Pretty simple install while you have the transmission open. I got it pretty close to reading the gear position correctly on the column indicator but rely on the Quick 4 display to make sure I am in the gear I want to be.
