Have been doing a lot of research on adapting the 6r80 into a EB with a SBF. Really like the idea of the 4.17 ratio first gear. Costs are about 1,000 to 1,500 more than going with a 4r70w so cost difference is not to bad. Overall length seems to be about the same as the 4r70w and crossmember, d20 adatpter, and electronic controller all available. I've found used 6r80s with low mileage for under $900 with free shipping and 90 day warrantees. Remanufactured units for $2600 to $3,200 with up to 3 yrs warranty.
Unfortunately my concerns come into play with the SBF to 6r80 adapter. It forces you to cut some of the 6r80 bellhousing so the original SBF starter can be used. Since this transmission has a one piece housing, that pretty much throws any warranties out the window. Not sure I'm will to fork out that much money with no guarrantees the transmission will work properly.
So, think I'm back to planning on a 4r70w install. At least it will cost less. Would have really liked that low first gear of the 6r80.
