I would select 2G over 1G, but it's my understanding that 1G had a better pump design. I don't remember the specifics, but I think it had to do with needle roller bearings. However, I did run across these two articles that detail many of the 6R80 upgrades over the years, if you're interested. Enjoy!

There are other articles, but these are two of the most detailed ones I've seen.

-Drivelines

-$140+ of new Mercon LV

-Adapter to run larger ID cooler lines. 1/2" or #8 AN fittings which make for an easier connection

If you make the mods on the PA you are ok. You'll destroy several D20's b4 you hurt the adapter I would think. D20's are good little tcases but let me.attach a pic of why the 205's last so long in extreme wheeling with big tires & low gearing. Compare the contact area, helical cut and double the width btw these two. This was my second rear output sliding gear compared to my 205 I upgraded to. D20 is the straight cut gear on the left. D20 internals almost looks like a toy compared to the 205 gears! :)

If you can afford the 2" add"l length from the Speed Gems that is a good option.

I just sent the last of my 35 + pics and 6r tech write up to Jon.

Thanks! I didn't realize I had 62 pics with the writeup. I still have to finish with a write up for which shifters seem to work smoothly and dfficulty with USShifts wiring for manual shifting.

I’d certainly love to hear more about the shifters. I’m leaning towards the Lokar shifter, though I read your previous comments about why you didn’t go that route. In particular, I’m curious about your comment that the Lokar shifter has limited mounting options.

I wanted a lockout for Park when wheeling in nasty vertical stuff. Almost done the backwards roll over 2x. Scared the crap out of me so I wanted to make slamming it into Rev if needed in a hurry a functioning reality. I have a plate that flips up on my Winters that allows my to go straight from D to R with one vertical movement w/o concern about accidently hitting park.

Lokar doesn't have the easy mounting off the horizontal that the Winters offers. It is a nice shifter but I couldn't figure out a way to somewhat easily make it possible to lock out Park in a "need Reverse now" type of situation.

Thanks for the info. The inability to go straight into Reverse is the only reason I haven’t bought the Lokar yet, but I don’t think I really considered the catastrophic effects of missing and hitting Park. That rules Lokar out for me, so now I’ll have to decide between Winters and VX. I look forward to reading your write-up.

Check out post #48 in the link below for linkage differences between winters and VX. This was one of the factors that pushed me towards VX.

Good to know. The VX mounting looks better to me too. Not a deal breaker, but like you said, a factor.

I’ve been doing a little looking. I wonder if I can modify the Lokar shifter to go straight to Reverse. It looks like a possibility, though it may not be worth it. I’ll have to do some more reading. Of course it may not be very safe without a stop gate at Drive.

I can attest hitting park when you have to have reverse will give you a head ache😵‍💫

If not from hitting your head, from the work following dragging your smashed junk back on its wheels.

One of my favorite aspects of the VX shifter is that you can add a couple of stops between the Reverse and Manual locations for safety on the street. Then, when you want to hit the trails, remove a couple of bolts and you’re ready to slam from Manual to Reverse unimpeded.

Yeah, Rory's done a great job on the VX. I got to see it a couple years ago before he started selling it. I'm not much for cleaning much or worrying about "spotlessness" lol , but Rory's VX looks like it will be dirty every day after the first trip. Using a Qtip on all those holes isn't something I'd do more than once... HAHA

Let us know if you get this put together!! I didn't have one at my shop but I spent an hour looking at one but couldn't see a slick way of making a lock out for Park.

Rory told me he’d send me some pictures of a SEMA build where someone dressed the VX up nicely in an Early Bronco, complete with a leather boot. I’ll post the photos once I get them.
