6 cyl swap problems

I have a question.

I bought this bronco and in it is a 6cyl motor.

The previous owner has the original 289 and it was stored in the garage since the 70’s along with the original motor mount towers. He said that he pulled it in the gas crunch 70's for better fuel consumption.

I can tell that someone cut out the old motor mount towers and added in the 6cyl mount towers. I have the V8 engine AND V8 engine mount towers.

I cut out the old mounts today and got the motor stuffed in the bronco but there is a 3-4” gap between the v8 bellhousing and the manual trans,. The valve covers are tight up against the firewall so I don’t know if I’m missing something or am I a dumbass.

Also the V8 came with a bellhousing attached. I would love to attach pics but I can't figure out how to make it work.

The transfer case adapter is shorter with a 6 cyl. Shouldn't be hard to find.

It depends on what all was swapped when the V8 to I6 conversion was done (first time I've ever heard of that by the way).

As viperwolf said, the I6 used a shorter adapter between the transmission and transfer case. If the adapters were swapped when the engines were to keep everything aligned, you need to find the longer V8 adapter to move the transmission forward.

If the V8 adapter was used when the I6 was swapped in, that would have put the engine very far forward in the engine bay and may not have fit at all. Did the I6 seem too close to the core support or in about the right location? If in the right location, the adapter is your best bet.

He was a hunter and his wife wasn't sure if he changed the motor because it was too loud and would scare off the animals when he would drive into the sticks, or he was conserving gas in the 70's.

So I should be looking for a V8 adapter from a 66-78 Bronco? Are there seals or gaskets that need replacing? Is it easy to install?

Is it ONLY the adapter that needs replaced?

First measure the adapter between the trans and tcase. The easiest thing would have been to swap it out but the previous owner could have done something crazy and moved the trans and tcase rearward.

I'll measure in the morning and search for one locally tomorrow. What is the measurement I'm looking for for either V8 or 6cyl.

Thanks guys for all the help!

Well, no, now that I think of it, you can't just swap the adapter. The V8 transmission and I6 transmissions have different length output shafts. If you have the I-6 adapter, you either have the I6 tranny or the V8 tranny with an output shaft that has been cut to shorten it the appropriate length. Neither of those will work with the longer V8 adapter.

After measuring to see what you have, you should be searching for a V8 tranny and adapter if you do in fact have the I6 stuff.

Bummer! I guess I'll be looking for a trans tomorrow.

To add to your work, this would be a great time to swap to a 5 speed trans! See what happens when you start asking questions here????!

Just went out and measured each Bronco. The V8 adapter is approximately 8-1/2" (measured between the back of the transmission and front of the transfer case) and the I6 adapter is approximately 6-1/2"

I'll take a look at the adapter measurements today.

Since the motor WAS out and I now installed the I6 back in until I gather my parts, I took time to measure the shaft.

I was told that I would need to change out the trans AND the trans adapter for the V8.

Bell housing bolting flange of trans to the very end of the shaft is 6.5"

The tail end of the trans flange to the tip of the shaft is 16"

.. For some reason I'm thinking you Welded the V8 MOUNT Towers onto the I6 LOCATION . THE V8 Towers go in a different place.

I wish it was that easy.

I spoke to Toms Bronco and supposedly they are familiar with this. They said I need a V8 transmission, V8 trans/ transfer case adapter with spud shaft and V8 clutch rod/linkage.

Know anyone in L.A. that has the parts? :)

ok but why are your valve covers close to the fire wall. Someone will have a trans .
... If you don't find one .. Ask me again after I get finished with my hunting trip in November 18...24th.

I don't have any 3 speeds to measure but someone here will.

Ok, so I picked up a transmission and everything needed to install my v8, however......

As I pulled the trans from the transfer case I noticed bearings dropping out, so far i found 9, how many total are there? I'm going to use heavy grease to hold them in place but what are some other tips for a somewhat painless installation?
