'73 Spindle and Hub Removal?

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm attempting my first disc break conversion.

Okay... I removed the factory lockout hubs, including both snap rings, and the spindle nut socket I have won't work. I've searched for hours and made several trips to various auto parts stores and I can't seem to figure out how to get the spindle nuts and outer bearings off.

I've included some pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Looks like you got the outer spindle nut off. That is a washer in there with the small round holes in it. You have to get that out using a pick or screwdriver and there is another spindle nut behind it. Pay attention to how it comes out so you will understand how it goes back together as the inner nut has a pin that aligns with a hole in that washer.

Although that doesn't look like the stock spindle washer. Got a pic of your lockouts? Wondering if you have some sort of aftermarket setup.

No, I don't believe that I've gotten the outer spindle nut off.

I tried pulling the washer out with some needle nose pliers, a pick, and a screwdriver. Nothing gets it to budge. It has a bit of play in it but won't pull directly out, nor will it screw out. I'm baffled.

Here are some pictures of the lockout. It's an AVM set. Never heard of them. I'll have to do a web search...

Was that behind your first nut? That looks like part of your hub with those threads??:?

No - the nuts haven't been removed. Only things removed so far are the AVM lockouts and the two snap rings. I can't figure out what that thing is nor do I know how to remove it...

:p?:?

Someone may have put it back together wrong or the cup backwards.I would try threading a small bolt in the hole and see if that will break it loose.

I agree with broncodriver99 in that there is a set screw in one or more of the tapped holes. I'm thinking that that is the first nut (or substitute) and there is a set screw that is acting like the locking pin in the washer behind it to keep it from backing out. This is just a theory though. If it were me I would see if there are any set screws in those holes and remove them then try unscrewing it.
very interesting set up.......

Now there is an lock ring usually on the end of the axle. And then there is about a 4 inch lock ring .. It hold that top piece in place until you remove it .. It's just a spring steel wire lock ring .. It's tough to get out But I use a very small screw driver and find the end. The big out side nut should have 4 spade slots cut in it for your spindle socket too fit into.. yours looks to me like it has 6 holes I think dodge used a 6 hole nut. Maybe some closer up pictures.
.. I've seen customers bring the nuts in for a replacement that they had taken off with a hammer & chisel.
... You can also reach behind the complete ass. and put a big screwdriver into the U=Joint and pry the axle back into the Dana 44 ..Remember this to punch the axle out when going back together to get the snap ring over the end of your axle shaft.

Got it!

Set screws! In each of the holes of the nut. I had to unscrew each of the set screws with a hex key and then unscrew the nut. Next came the washer and then the second spindle nut. Hub slipped right off after that.

Mile Marker hubs will be used during reassembly, along with new spindle nuts.

Interesting, never seen anything like that. I pulled a set of disc brakes off of a Chevy Dana 44 a couple of weeks ago and it had self locking spindle nuts that I'd never seen before.
