Adapting 66/67 doors to a 74?

I've got a lead on 66/67 doors but I didn't read until today that the striker posts were different. How hard is it to put 66/67 doors on a 74? I want the removable window frames. For about double the costs I can get the new shells but thought I would check first. Thanks!

I've heard iffy reviews of how the new shells fit.

You could always swap the window frames - I believe they're the same. I think you'd need to drill out the spot welds holding the '74 window frames on, then just bolt the 66-67 window frames in and go.

The difference is the location and type of striker plate. The 74 has an egg shaped striker and the 66-67 has a round striker. There is also a difference in the height of the striker plate. One is located higher in the striker post than the other. I have 66-67 doors in my 74 and had to redo the striker post anyway so just ordered the 66-67 post and strikers.
The 66-67 doors the lock was not integrated with the handle like the 68-77.

I do not know how different the striker posts themselves are though.

Hope this helps.....

That definitely helps! Thanks guys! I don't have doors now and need to redo the body anyway so if these are good I'll get the doors and just replace the posts and strikers. Probably need to anyway.

Thanks!!

If you already have doors, you can convert them over to removable window frames. There are a few threads out there showing how to do just such a thing. For instance: http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149988&highlight=removable+window+frame

If you lack doors completely and are not afraid of body work, you will need to weld in the 66-67 striker posts. But bear in mind, you will be restricted to using only 66-67 doors.

The other, and harder to locate, option is to find 1968 doors. This was the only year to incorporate, from the factory, a removable window frame AND the later model year striker post and door latch. But, they are a bit harder to find and somewhat pricey for a good set.

Bitch'n'Bronco, you are correct. There is also a height difference in there mounting on the striker post, not just the striker itself.

.

I have a 68-77 passenger door that I got from a local guy that needs a good bit of work so I basically lack doors all together. How much of a downside is being restricted to 66-67 doors?

Aside from only having two model years of doors to draw from if you need them again in the future, nothing. Same door for the most part. Just a different striker set up. I'd toyed with the idea of trying to score 68 doors for my 72 but now I'm convinced the removable window frame conversion is the way to go.

Where abouts are you located? Location could have an impact on the local availability of good used doors too.

I have the opposite problem, a '66 with later model doors. PO did a hack job trying to get the round strikers to work on the oval latch doors at the correct height. One worked and one didn't so I removed them and will get around to making it all correct in the future.
So yeah, your new doors will have a different striker shape (round) and will be located slightly higher (~1/2" I think).

Actually if you can find 68 doors they will have the removeable window frame and door latch in the correct position. But since you have a line on some doors I would just move and swap out the latches to match your current body or cut out the current striker and replace with a 66/67 striker at the correct height. Its closer to a 1in height diffferance in the strikers.

I would cut the doors and move the latch to match the 68-77 strike post, use your old doors for the right parts. 66-67 doors have different interior handles also. You'll be building 68 doors, easy.;D
