Another Clutch recommendation needed

Hi All,

So I think I have read every post about clutch chatter and things to troubleshoot on that. I think my next option is to just get a new clutch.

Because I went and removed transmission and existing clutch already, I want to make sure I put the Right one back in when I do. I would hate to do this 3 times.

Too many choices out there for what seems to be a good clutch. I am looking for recommendations or even ones to stay away from would be as much value.

Centerforce dual friction or centerforce II?

any other?

I have stock 302, with 3 speed. Dana 20. 4.5" WH Lift. New body mounts, new transmission cross member mounts, engine mounts are good. 6 deg Shim kit in rear (but still sort of high pinion angle). U-bolts are new and tight. New and clean flywheel, no oil leaks.

I have some serious clutch chatter going into 1st. after a ton of troubleshooting, I think I narrowed it down to the new paddle style ceramic clutch disc that I installed. It seems to grab great at high RPM and dumping the clutch, but it definitely is not how I want to be driving it. I just prefer an easy driving dependable one. Smooth and easy. I have replaced all bushings in equalizer and removed rear drive shaft (with chatter remaining in front wheel drive only).

My thoughts are to immediately go to a centerforce, but I live in Hawaii and shipping costs for anything to buy are a big deterrent.

In any case, This forum has been great! I have been building my '74 for the past 4 years, and some dedicated quarantine time in the garage finally got me back on the road. Once I get this clutch chatter out, I will be one proud owner.

LUK manufactures the bulk of the auto parts store clutch rebuilt kits, as well as the base pressure plates for the Centerforce products, so I have run their stuff in several rigs without issue or complaint. I've run both LUK and the Centerforce II in my '77 F150 over the past 20+ years behind a 429 with both 4-speed and 5-speed transmissions, also with good results.

What gear ratio and tires are you running just out of curiosity?

I love my LUK diaphram.
Whatever you choose, be CERTAIN to have the flywheel surfaced at a GOOD machine shop. The best clutch disc in the world will chatter like crazy on a warped flywheel.

It shouldnt..but while its all apart would be a good time to have it double checked. Ive had one that was lightly warped right out of the box.

Just throwing this out, but I got a clutch from Modern Driveline in Idaho, Boise area for my 96 Explorer and NV3550.

They make some of their clutches in house... Not sure how extensive their Bronco line is yet, but the are working on a hydraulic throw out option right now...

Ha - I have researched for a while, never heard of these. Will look into it for sure. Handmade in ID.

Thanks - I probably hoped that it wouldn't, but just to be sure. The tranny/transfer case was not the easiest thing to uninstall/reinstall. I would hate to do it again.

What do the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces look like? Any hot spots and/or cracks? In any case, at this point I'd probably take it to the machine shop to be resurfaced.
I'm not a fan of the paddle type discs for a non race application. The're just isn't enough fricion material. That's why I prefer the Centeforce II rather than the Centerforce Dual friction.
Either way though you're going to find the Centerforce clutch is very easy to push, but grabs really well.
