And dead serious about it.

Today I was involved in a horrific rollover on Pucker Canyon in Stoddard Valley. On the upper drop in, the ass again went over teakettle. Problem with this is that I rolled four or five times down a 100ft ravine. These were violent, hard, high speed rolls. Yet it could have been a lot worse, as the bronco stopped just before going off the 2nd tier. If it had, we would have gone at least another 300ft. Amazingly, myself and Carl Case actually walked away from it with no major injuries. I am here today only because of pure luck, a good cage, and because the guy upstairs must not have wanted to meet me so soon.

This was by far the worst roll I have seen anyone go thru and actually walk away from. The bronco is toast and will be parted out. And, at this point I do not see myself building another rig in the near future. In all honesty, I am suprised that I am actually alive today given the severity of what happened. It amazed me that the cage and rig held up as well as it did too. I just can't see myself wheeling again. My life flashed before my eyes today, and it was unlike anything I experienced in my previous rolls. My family does not need to go thru life without their father/husband. So, at this point, I am calling it quits.

Check the for sale section for everything I am planning on getting rid of.

Added from a buddy's post:
for perspective, the first pic is where the roll started, but it's not scotty..

Then he went over the edge and barrel rolled a few times...

Glad to hear that you are OK. That is what really matters.

As far as getting out of wheelin' you gotta do what is right for you.

Wow, I too am happy to hear you are okay. Yep, families need a daddy. You do know it's a Bronco thing. You need to have a Bronco even if it is just a toy ! You are one of us :)

I kinda know what you are feeling though. One of my friends got killed while we were at the track and it made me go home and sell my car. I don't really miss the racing but I sure do misss that Mustang :)

Geez. I guess that turned out to be a crappy day. Like you said, be glad that it ended with you and Carl in good shape. Sorry to hear that you are wanting out...I understand completely but maybe build a mild rig just for Sunday outings... :)

Scotty - I too am glad you were spared. You have too much knowledge and experiece to not share. You know a 100% stocker to just tinker with might be nice 180% turnabout so you are not out of the bronco world too much.

Got pics?
Can you think of anything to your cage you would/should have done differently now that you have seen it work in a rollover?

Scotty,
Glad to hear you and Carl were ok after such a nasty set of events. I cringed just reading. A tribute to your cage building skills. It is good the family will still have a husband and Dad :) Best wishes on whatever you decide to take up for a hobby/pastime. As always let me know if you decide to do the right side of the Mis. deal.

I'm glad you and your buddy are alright. It looks like the time you spent building your cage was well spent. Having something like this happen definitely makes you appreciate what you have and what you could lose a lot more. Whatever happened to the days when exploring was good enough? Just getting out of town and into the boonies....having a bronco built good enough that when an obstacle came up it made it easier to tackle.

wow...Glad you're alive!
that was one of those life changing events huh.
enough to turn a broncoholic straight.
You can get a stocker and stick to mild trails (or street)...
Selfishly, I guess, I don't want to lose your input.

Ouch. Glad your okay. Give yourself a bit of time to get over the initial blow of this and then go back and assess it again and see if you still want to get out of it. 4 Wheeling is pretty safe in comparison to many other things as long as safety is always the first priority. For instance downhill skiing or riding a motorcycle. I can completely understand though if you do decide to stay out of it. I hit a deer doing 60 on a Motorcycle close to 20 years ago and that was enough for me to get rid of the bike and I haven't ridden one on the street since then for the same reasons you have given. Even if you do get out of it maybe we could ask a favor of you. Specifically if you could get us more details on what went wrong and what was right. I.E. How did you get in this situation in the first place and what safety measures did you take in advance that enabled you to walk away from it? Even if you do get out then maybe your experience can help the rest of us stay out of the same situation or walk away from it if we ever have the same thing happen.

What is really screwing with my head about all of this, is that I did everything right in this situation. I watched four other rigs run the exact same line. Everyone spotting me said I was on the same line. When the ass end came up, I punched the skinny pedal to bring it down with no luck. From there I was history. Looking at that section before hand, I remember commenting that if anyone rolled there, it would be really bad. Sure enough, I managed to do it. I am pretty sore today, especially where my harnesses were around my neck, and I have friction burns on my shoulder and bruises all over them as well.

As far as the cage was concerned, I wouldn't change anything. Not one thing about it. When we finally stopped, the passenger spreader bar took a brunt of the blow. It was pushed about 6-8" in, and tore at the main hoop just behind the weld. The gusset held it in place though. This is not a fault in the cage though. The impact it took was extremely hard, and I was shocked that it held up as well as it did. I will have pics today sometime of the aftermath, but my camera is in the Bronco still in camp. I have a buddy who is trailering it home today, so I expect to have it later this afternoon.

Glad you're OK. Hate to loose a fellow wheeler but definitely respect your decision to get out. Take care of your family.
