Crossed over my original Harmonic balancer with the casting number E4TE-A3A or so i thought....got this and does NOT look like it's gonna worky.....anyone with some insight? i have a 73 mongrel with a later engine in it not installed by me....
If you know the original engine application and year it shouldn't be hard to find a balancer. Of course the PO could have done some parts swapping on you to add to the problem.
What's the number? What other info do you know about the motor? Being a truck part number it could be from a 302 or a 351w. The big difference is going to be the balance.
Old one is a 50 oz... had gotten a 28 and waaaay different. i'm thinking mustang 302 early 80's maybe? looking for block castings tonight....I've had it four years and never had to take much apart other than the timing chain last summer...
Well, until you find a casting number for the block, it's gonna be tough to get that damper precise. I know....big help huh.
My suggestion is to contact Damper Dudes and show them these photographs.....if they're willing to review it with you. Ultimately, it might be better just to send them your old one and let them provide something that matches.
The PO of my 351 engine was on a quest to get the most fan spacing he could. He found a waterpump pully that set back an inch from stock. He then had a machine shop turn down the face of his harmonic balancer an inch so the pulleys would line up. Luckily I knew this going in, so when I had my engine rebuilt (the first time...) I gave them the new harmonic balancer and told them the face will need to be turned to match the old one.
My balancer(s) look exactly like your old one. I think I still have the old one. I can check the casting number when I get home if you like.
The casting number from you old balancer says its off a truck engine. I'd take your new balancer back and see what else they come up with may 84/85 truck. I dont have my balancer book close or I'd look it up.

Makes sense. My 351 is originally from an 86 Econoline, and that's the balancer I bought. Again, my new one looked like Taskers new one, and my old one looked like Taskers old one.
