Hey guys, I'm headed to the Bronco Takeover for the first time and want to be ready when I get there. Where's the best place to get a sand flag? I saw a couple on Amazon for $50, but I don't really have anything to compare them to.

Or has someone done an awesome write up somewhere on how to DIY a sand flag? I know it's not hard, but I would rather buy one since I need to get my engine back together before the event ;D

Looking for the same thing myself. They have flags available for sale there, I just need to figure out the mount so all i need is to mount the flag when I get there.

Jon, I was researching this a couple weeks ago. Shipping the 9' flag is kind of pricey compared to the 2-piece poles that are available.

Last time I shopped for some it was a big motorcycle store that had good prices on accessories. (Chaparral Motorsports) They bought them in bulk. Almost an add-on item on the way out the door.

As for a national store that might carry them, Cycle Gear. They can have good deals, or crazy full price.

Shipping gets crazy. Can we say "truck freight"? Over length makes for fugly shipping costs.

I go to the dunes quite a bit with dirt bikes and sand rails. I always get my flags there. I’ve bought them online and the two piece design isn’t as good. The flags at glamis/Gordon’s Well where we go are higher quality, thicker and one piece design. Most of the time they are an advertisement so you get them pretty cheap. 7-8 bucks.

Check a mining supplier. We were running a pipeline through a coal mine a few years ago and we had to have a 13' flag. I bought some at a mining supply in KY.

Just about all the general stores/gas stations sell the flags so it might be best to buy it local when you get there.
Bring a drill/bits to put a hole in the bumper (or remove a foglight, ect) and you should be good to go.
Another item that might be good to have is tow hooks attached to the frame, front and rear. Comes in handy when you have to tow stuck or broken down jeeps off the hills... ;D

You can buy them at most of the gas stations along with duneland and B&L motorsports right at the dunes entrance. You need a mount at the front with a 1/2" hole(mine are a 7/16" bolt but are also pretty old), you can buy a variety of mounts that bolt to existing holes or clamp onto towhooks at the same places that sell flags as well.

You will also need a state park sticker and both ORV stickers, these can be purchased at the visitor center about a 1/2 mile from the dunes entrance, they can no longer be purchased at the entrance.

Silver lake requires a certain size rectangular flag so if trying to get something beforehand be aware that a triangle flag will not pass.

I was once told that a lot of bicycle shops have them around central Florida.
Apparently they install them on those big three wheeled bicycles that older folks usually ride. Maybe its a requirement. Never noticed it but then started looking closely and yup, all the old folks on those three wheelers have that tall ass fiberglass flag pole.

The bike flags I've seen are pretty small diameter, I'm not sure if they would hold up.

At silver lake they have to touch a bar at the entrance that's mounted at 10'.

Silver lake also requires exhaust with a spark arrester or baffled muffler, there is a decibel limit of 94db that is enforced(at times, they aren't always doing sound check), if you are running a straight through glasspack muffler you might run into issues with the spark arrested part of the rule, they do check most vehicles.

You need a steel top or roll bar and seatbelts, if you have a trail rig with no windshield you need eye protection.

No alcohol on the dunes, if you have a cooler it might be checked.

I've been going to the dunes since the mid nineties so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask, there are several others here as well that are very well experienced duners at silver lake.

FWIW duneland shows a two piece flag for 37.95, I think the one piece ones are a little cheaper but they don't show on the website since they don't ship them.

I've always just bought mine at my local motorcycle/ATV shops, but I live in a state with sand dunes, so maybe that wouldn't apply in non-dune states. I always get the heavy duty fiberglass ones as they seem to last the best and don't whip me in the helmet like some of the others do. I don't night ride, but if you do, an LED one could be a good idea.
