None of those pre-packaged kits include everything you'll need. This is what I normally use on a rebuild. Ignore the filter.

So, if I break this thing down, and it's in good shape, how can I tell? There's a chance it doesn't need a rebuild, but I feel it'd be smarter to tear it down before throwing it in..

you will know if one of the hard parts are broke, they will be chewed up or broke. 9 times out of 10 it's just changing out the frictions, bands and other wearable parts.

For example on the one I am rebuilding I knew it was burnt up. When I broke it down the direct drum was welded to the sun shell due to heat. I literally could not get the two apart. It's one of those things where if it's broke, you know it is broke.

My C-4 is starting to leak badly...... just curious I called Ken's Transmissions (Phoenix AZ) who did the original rebuild in 1992 ($350). I asked how much to reseal the transmission: Bench job $600 them R&R $800. Then I asked how much to rebuild: Bench job $800 them R&R $1200.......

Local guy is quoting $600-800, but I'm going to forge ahead and do it myself.

Greg for $2g's you could have a bomb proof C4! I say you have the knowledge to build your own.

Less than 2 if you are doing the work yourself. I am 1K in and cant thing of a part I could buy to make it stronger with the exception of a custom converter or something crazy like getting the case braced, but I don't need a custom converters and the stock converters are certainly not the weak points. For a grand you can build one that will hold well over 500HP. $500 will build you something that will stand up even behind a big block, $1000 and you are never rebuilding the thing again if it is going behind anything other than a blown 1000HP racer.

My transmission guy charges $350 rebuilt and installed for $500 you get a new torque converter, shift kit, flywheel and tranny mount. Been using him for over twenty years only problem I ever had was a shift linkage was out of adjustment fix right away.

A shame your guy isn't local, badmuttstang. ;)

Low bush - you have any details of that $500 build? ;)

No such thing as never need a rebuild again. Even the rubber seals breakdown after a while. Those seem to be things that are often forgotten about by budget rebuilders.

Basically get the broader 500HP kit and a hardened input shaft. It runs you about $500 and it will make a pretty stout C4.

Agreed when I say never rebuilt, I was engaging in a bit of hyperbole but my intent when fixing things is to put off having to deal with them again as long as possible.

I'm going to try and get the PO who built the engine and see if I can get some details. It's supposed to have a cam and some other work.

I think a stock C4 would get it, but you never know.

Craigslist,Craigslist,craigslist....save your money have a list of parts you need and be patient. I bought a rebuilt c4 with cooler for $200 minus bell housing from a guy who didn't finish his build. I also bought a 9" with Yukon gold axels no chunk for $300. Be patient good parts are put there. Also the adapters are expensive so a tranny and transfer case out of a later bronco may be a cheaper route

That's about what I've been getting quotes at around here.. I think for the same $600, I could do the work myself and have a bullet proof transmission..
