Dana 20 Rebuild Question

Hello,

I remember reading, possibably some where here but I can't find it again, that there are some parts of the J shift Dana 20 that can be used to upgrade the T shift Dana 20 when rebuilding. It was either about making it stronger or a better sealing possibility?

So, I am rebuilding my Dana 20 T shift soon, and I have a good J shift Dana 20 donor sitting on my garage floor. Can anyone send me to the right link or offer their knowledge?

Thanks!

The gears are lower in the T-shift, so that's the opposite (J guys sometimes like to swap those out from T cases). The only thing I could think of is, instead of using the T-shift mods to twin stick it (where you have to grind the inner rails to allow more movement across the pills, and also build a stop to prevent a L-H situation), you can use the single-pill J-shifter rails and do the single, easier mod, just cutting the flags, to twin stick it.

OK, thank you! That sounds familiar...better for sealing or is it a little stronger?

Less wear and tear on the yoke and a whole lot easier to work with. The snap ring on the T shaft sucks.

J shift rails do a better job of positively locking the rails in the different selections.

If you have both, take the gears off the T style case and put them on the J shafts and in the J case. That is the case you want to use, then put the J gears in the T case and sell that one (let the buyer know that you swapped the gears, to be on the level).

Putting the J shift front out put in also will allow you to change it (if it brakes) without removing the t case.
