Sounds like they got more GM parts than you actually need for the swap. Pictures would help a ton.

Is the extra axle eb width? Is it set up for leafs or coils? My initial thought was a dana 44 upgrade with disc but with 6 lug rotors it sounds like he grabbed it for the dana 30 disc brake swap. To go disc on a 30 it uses chevy brake parts.

Hard to say why the parts are collected in that way.
But as mentioned a common disk brake upgrade is to use GM disk brakes, which are 6-lug. The exception here is you use Ford rotors which are the correct 5-lug.
My best guess is they got a complete GM disk setup, including the 6-lug rotors. And just never got around to picking up the 5-lug rotors to complete the conversion. Thus the (incomplete) box of parts that never got installed. Needed that one more part. But a good set of 6-lug rotors, that's good trading material.

Also a picture of your existing front differential in the bronco would help. Since 71 was the transition year between a Dana 30 and a Dana 44 it would be good to know for sure what you have now.
