That makes sense. Didn't think about sealed connectors.
I recall the 5-pin would default to stand alone for start up, once running the ECM would start sending signals and would fire off those. So the 7 or 8 doing the same.
I run a Ford TFI module (another EFI ignition module for ECM controlled timing) triggered off a set of points. Pair that with an E-core coil and you have a nice spark off a set of points.
