Does your stock horn work? Both of my Broncos have no horn.

Today I had the need to lay on the horn but my Broncos are both hornless. I have had my 74 for almost 20 years and my 66 for less than a year. The first time the horns have honked on either was today.... When I hot wired them to the battery. My 74 has a Grant steering wheel and I'm not sure it even has the horn parts in it. I also see in the wiring diagram that the 74 uses a horn relay and the 66 does not. The 66 has a stock wheel but not the original wheel. Again, I'm not positive that I have all of the parts. I don't really want some aftermarket horn button on the dash. I'm considering a better aftermarket wheel for the 74 but the stock wheel has to stay on the 66. Is there a weak link in the system that usually causes the problem? I have a new column harness for the 74 but was not going to install it until I mke a steering wheel decision. Any advice on where to start?

74 horn button puts a gnd on the horn wire in the coulmb.there 2 little brass buttons in plastic pieices where horn button attaches.ground one and see if horn works.74 horn relay is by starter solenoid.also if horn sounds weak, there is a screw on the horn to adjust vol.power comes from pos term of starter solenoid yellow wire.

The stock horn in my '69 didn't work when I bought it. I had a shop repair it, and it worked fine. A few years later when I installed a Grant wheel, I used all the parts in the kit to keep the horn stock, and it worked even better than the repaired stock wheel. It is a bit of work to get them working, but it can be done with stock and aftermarket steering wheels.

Best place to start would be the relay. If you can jump the three prong connector where the two yellow wires are you should get a beep. If all is good there, move onto the column (assuming your relay is good - if not, they're $5.00 at AutoZone)

Next make sure your steering wheel shaft is grounded (the middle splined shaft that spins).

Lastly (for your aftermarket steering wheel) you should have a copper disc on the back of your Grant adapter that rubs against a copper pin on the column.
There should be a wire from the Grant adapter with a female connector that connects to the male prong on the back of the steering wheel in the center location. Then once you press the horn the circuit should ground and go beep.

If it doesn't, check the ground on the splined shaft again. Try a good ground as that tends to be the issue that comes across most often.

On a Grant, if its the style with stainless looking spokes, powdercoated or whatever, people forget to put the aluminum tape under the bolts connecting wheel to adapter, that provides ground path. On the three stock ones I have fixed, either bad relay or just connection corroded in relay plug.

My horn doesn't work either Grant wheel on it. I'm like you don't know if I have all the parts or not. That said keep us up to date on what you have to do to fix it, it might help me out.

Do you have one or two horns? Just curious my 75 has one, but I don't know if that is right or not.

I think my horn works...but I dunno cuz I unplugged it. woke up one morning at 3:30am to hear some fool out in the street blowing his horn! got up after 10 minutes to check it out, and sure enough, the horn in my 74's just blowin away! %)
I'm going to put in a P.A. instead.
horns are nice...but I'd rather be able to pick up the mic and say, "light's green a$$hole!" jk I wouldn't say that

x2. But before you get a new relay take a look for rusty terminals on the relay. I jumpered the relay and the horn worked but it wasn't a bad relay. The terminals on my stock relay were all corroded. I polished them up and the horn has been good to go for over a year.

nope. never could get the thing to work. Just by passed the whole thing and added a new relay and a foot switch beside the hi beam switch that way I can blow the horn and keep both hands on the wheel.

If I can't figure it out this could be a good option. In my searches, I read that someone had converted the washer fluid button on the dash (My 66 has one) to a horn. I could do this since I now have electric wipers.

I did a little looking and my 66 horn button is firm and does not seem to push in at all. The horn on this one is disconnected so I'm guessing there was a reason why the PO did this. On the 74 I have the silver backing plate but its appears to be missing a few parts. Gotta do a little more quality time with the test light on this one.

That sounds familiar. I went out to my bronco which was parked out on the street one morning and found a note from a cop. Apparently the horn was blasting for a while so he disconnected the battery for me. I've had other issues with the 74's horn. It also used to blow sometimes during turns. Pissed off more than a few drivers I'm sure. It took me years to find that single copper strand that was poking out of the horn wire and grounding.
