You were probably fighting an O-ring that has not moved since it was built.
Distributor needs to be for a roller cam. Depends on what ignition control you are planning. Sounds like you are going for an EEC-IV computer? Maybe a stand alone that will run a Ford TFI ignition?

Or, if getting rid of the computer entirely, the 1-year only ’85 Mustang distributor should be Dura Spark and still roller cam compatible.
Or are they still a TFI type? Don’t remember anymore!

Yes, Mustang distributors work great.

Todd Z.
You gotta be a little bit careful. You and @DirtDonk are both right and “not so right”

The problem is that one year only, automatic transmission only 1985 CFI Mustang 5.0 non-HO with the flat tappet cam and TFI, versus the 5 speed with roller and duraspark.

I don’t know much about them except to stay away. So I only run the E7 mass air HO stuff, and Im always safe. But there were some oddballs.

Roller cam Duraspark distributor was indeed a 1-year only, '85 GT. But you need to add the qualifier of 5-speed. Because the automatic was not a roller cam.
