Help! I have swapped my front belt system to the mercury mountaineer front belt drive system and I have a leak at the front timing cover seal. I used the timing cover and two side mounting brackets off the mountaineer 5.0 but I am wondering if it uses a different front seal than the regular 302 front seal which is what I used?

My original engine is a 1985 ford 302 block which I had installed and then added Flo tech heads, headman headers, edelbrock performer manifold, edelbrock 600 series carburetor and upgraded cam. I used the 302 gasket set and seal, which has a flanged seal. when I purchased the mountaineer cover I assumed it took the same seal as the 302-5.0 mustang set. Any help would be appreciated.

My 302 seal has a metal flange and the replacement mountaineer seal looks like it has a rubber outer side, and it looks like it is leaking between the flange and the housing but its hard to tell.

It uses the same seal as all the SBF’s. It’s best to align the timing cover by installing the seal and balancer, then tightening the timing cover bolts. That keep it centered if you don’t have the centering dowels. The older blocks didn’t have them.

Make sure you lube the rubber seal with oil too so it doesn't start up dry. Does the crank have a groove worn in it?

Sandman! I rechecked and it's not leaking around the crank it's leaking at the seal flange and the timing cover at the bottom of the seal. I have a good view of the seal and cleaned it and after a while I can see it starting to seep between the seal flange and cover.
