BRGs are tough but I guess a 1/2 inch bolt is too much. The wife did an errand. Came back and when we tried to leave again an hour later, the passenger rear was totally flat. Jacked it up and looked for the problem and saw this! She said she felt a thump, but that was several miles away. So the BFG got her home. I was a couple of months out from new tires, mainly because the fronts were pretty well worn, but this bumped it up. I asked what tires she wanted in it this time. She says BFGs again. I tend to agree. Have no idea what a 1/2 inch bolt is doing in the rear tire. You would think the front would run over the problem first. But there it is.

Two positives in this situation offset some of the sting.....

Wife and Bronco made it safely home, and bolt found the tire before you invested in the new set!

What Steve said. That tire is very fixable but what is the date code?

I was mistaken, confusing the BFG tires. That tire was discontinued in 2015, and replaced with the KO2. So even if it was the last tire off the assembly line it’s still a minimum of 9 years old.

Most chain tire shops won’t fix a tire more than 5 years old and no manufacturer recommends more than 10 years old, most are in the 7-8 year camp. Expired tires are a safety hazard.

Local tire shop kept a jar of stuff that they took out of tires. Some of which was pretty impressive. Whole wrenches were one that really stood out to me. Drywall screws were more common than nails.

The front tire probably kicked it up, made it just the right angle, altitude, and velocity to poke itself into the rear tire as it went over.

Then again, is the part that’s sticking up, where the head wore off? Actually, looks like the tip of the bolt, where the head would be inside the tire!
Now that has to be some kind of an unusual circumstance!

Well, I went down to Discount tires and dropped 1400 bucks on a new set of 12.50x33 BFGs All Terrains. Like Shimmy says, new rubber is so satisfying. Yes, these were old tires. And yes I checked and they were bought in 2013, so a good ten years. Which is why they were in my sights for the next couple of months. Hopefully we don't encounter any bolts any time soon.
