I called a large yard here in minnesota looking for a 4x4 steering box and a 4x2 box. the guy said they have the 4x4 box already pulled but they want 150 bucks plus a 100 core. WTF? Since when do junk yards get a core charge? Its cheeper to buy the parts new or get the swap from the vendors!

I've noticed that also. The P&P here charges a core charge for everything, even wiper arms.

It can get worse. Here in Maryland, traditional junk yards and u-pulls are almost non-existent and the ones that are still operating have absolutely nothing older than a few years...the "hot selling/quick turning" inventory. Maryland instituted a special inventory tax for salvage yards, making it economically bad for them to let older stuff sit around on their property.

I 'bout cried real tears when the crusher came in to the local yard and destroyed a dozen or so old F-series and a couple EB shells..

These are what are located down here. Really clean, good turn-over of vehicles, and prices are preposted. Acutally pretty helpful too. They will bring tractor over to help move stuff if needed. You can even give them certain makes and models, and they will email you when that vehicle does hit the lot.

Gotta throw my .02 in here. I owned a wrecking yard for 10 years and then worked at another for another 10. Loved the "Game", hated the business. Slowly changed it from a "Junkyard" to a "Wrecking Yard", never made it to a "Automotive Recycling Yard". (junkyard has stoves, refrig, etc in piles; wrecking yard has all cars and trucks; automotive recycing yards are fully computerized, nerds on the counter that drive riceburners that don't know what muscle cars are and don't care!!)

My yard had inventory as early as the mid '30s, and lots of the '70s muscle type cars.

The reason for core charges is simple (we sold parts and asked for an core or exchange also). Scrap has a very high value now and it all adds up. (when I crushed my yard in '97 I got $36 a ton, this year crushed cars are $250+) Also, on things like exchange or "core" doors, there are salvageable (and resellable) parts on them... Over half of the tilt columns we took in exchange, we rebuilt and resold....

And core buyers came by weekly, buying core steering boxes and racks, yellow metal (rads and copper wire), catalitic convertors ($10 then, now as high as $150), FWD axles, engines, electrical components (alt, starters, and now computers). It was good money, and CASH!!!. A core buyer will drop a $1,000 plus cash on the counter nowadays.

So, there is a reason for the core charge.. One has to get every bit of income they can nowadays in a business.

sorry for the long post, but I thought this needed an explanation.

Do I miss the business? YES! Do I regret getting out of it and getting rid of the headaches of the regualtions? NO!!!!!!!

I do understand why they charge a "core charge", for the money. The problem is that sometime the charge makes it too expensive to buy used and not new.

yards up here are much the same , really don't even think of using them, there parts are usually 1/2 the price of dealer , so by getting to know your local parts counter guy I usually end up with a better deal and its new. Nothing more than maybe 10 years old in the yards around here.

Cores at a junkyard are BS. Plain and simple. I have a used set of Dana 44 brake drum sitting here right now. If I take those to the scrap yard with a bunch of other stuff, I'll get about $1.00 - probably less. If I hang onto them until a buyer comes along, I'll get $20. In no way shape or form will I get both. The junkyard needs to decide if they just want to crush stuff and be done with it, or wait and sell it for more money. Doing both is just sticking it to your customers.

It sounds like you are after a 78-79 box, I would be looking around on CL or MN Mud for that, not a junkyard. You can look up the inventory at the U-Pull lots in East Bethl and Rosemount and find what truck you are after for the 4x2 box (IIRC an 80-90's pickup will work).

My favorite is the BullS**t Enviromental Fee. What the heck as that about?

Maybe its an attempt to defray or cover the kind of taxes that my state imposed on salvage yards that forced them to clear out nearly all of their vehicle inventory or even shut down all together? ?:?

kent wash.
I stay away from most wrecking yards just because of all this. As said you got to watch craigs list and not be in rush, last spring at the swap meet I sell at every year I scored a 4x4 box for $30 the 4x2 box will come to me in time.

A few years ago swap meets were geting out of control on there prices but with the down turn in the economy people are selling stuff at a better price, from I've seen.

Ya im after the steering boxes. I searched Cl and called every guy that had a 76-79f150 for sale. After about 6 calls i found a guy with one, and another guy with two. Both them guys aslo have a few of the later year boxes. I told them ill give them 40 for the older boxes and they said heck ya! Maybe i should have only offered 20 a piece%)

Do a little searching for some smaller junk yards. I got both boxes for 75 bucks and they both looked great and the guy even pulled them for me. Theres still some good ole boys out there. Just might have to ask around locally, If they advertise on the internet then your most likely gonna pay top dollar.

I have been getting parts since the mid 90's. Some yards ask a fortune, some give stuff away. Always been that way. I have been quoted $100 for one used shock at a yard once (was getting some other stuff and had a blown shock on the pickup bed trailer and didn't feel like spending $15 for a new one).

buyer's law is always plain and simple: "when I'm buying something no matter what it is it better be cheap and the seller ain't allowed to make a profit off the sale"
