leaking C4 or D20?

Last night we took the 73 out towards the local lake. This is the first time since buying it that it has been up to 55 mph for a sustained amount of time. i noticed the smell of something burning and soon saw smoke coming from underneath. pulled over and noticed the muffler streaked in what looked like oil causing smoke to come off it. Looked like oil was dripping off the D20 where the drive shaft comes out. Got it home and noticed the kickdown rod had come loose from the tranny. Checked my fluid level in C4 and it is over the "do not" fill line. So i guess the question I have is my C4 overfilled causing it to leak? or what should i be looking for? It still shifts fine.
Forgive my ignorance but if i need to drain the fluid where is the drain plug?

here are some pics. Its hard to see the fluid dipstick but its over the line

Thanks

Is it gear oil from D20 or red AT fluid to start with? Then work your way to the problem.

Trans is too full causing it to come out the vent (top front of adapter) when it gets hot and expands. Take some fluid out. It should only see the full mark when its really hot.

And you dont have a drain plug on your trans. You can either remove the dipstick tube from the pan (kindof a pain for only draining a little) or buy a few feet of small diameter tubing, feed it down the dipstick tube, and use a small hand operated fluid pump to get some out.

I use this method without the pump but with some clear tubing so I can see the fluid before it gets to me.

Thanks! I will take some fluid out. So should i pull enough out to get it down to the do not add circle or lower?

Depends on the temp. I would get it down to just above the bottom of the stick if completely cool.

Yup. At least see how much is in there. Or in my case, you will fine none at all! Sounds like the truck is new to you.
