Need help with wires to coil

I put everything back together with a new intake & carb and it was running fine in the garage. As soon as I put it in gear and tried to drive out it started backfiring (blew a hole in the carb foam) and stalled. I could start it again, but if I tried to put it in gear it would bang and stall.

I pulled the plugs on the drivers side while it was idling and it seemed to make no difference. I then pulled all the plugs off the distributor. I had marked the plugs for which cylinder they went to but not on the distributor. I reinstalled the plugs per the manual and now it just cranks.

Could I have the coil wired wrong? There are three wires coming out of the distributor into the harness and two wires back out that were attached to the old coil (Green/yellow stripe & Red/green stripe). Haynes shows the a red/green from the starter motor relay to one side of the coil and green/yellow to the other side. Is this correct or am I way off? Why would only one side of the engine fire?

Sounds like you have a problem and created other problems trying to fix the first.

Let's get it back to running first.

Pull the #1 spark plug and bump the engine over until you get pressure in the cylinder pushing your thumb off the plug hole. Set the timing marks to TDC at that point. You are now at TDC #1 firing position.

Pop the cap off the distributor, look at where the rotor is pointing. Put the cap back on and put the #1 plug wire on the post that lines up with the rotor. Now you have #1 plug wire on the right location. Go counterclockwise on the distributor following the firing order putting the rest of the plug wires on.

It amy not match the service manual. Why? Someone may have put the distributor in a tooth or more off. Then wired accordingly. Really not a problem. All that really matters is sending spark to the right hole at the right time.

Green-yellow goes to the neg. side of the coil, red-green to the pos. side.

Here is a picture of the engine last year. It looks like #6 & #8 are right next to each other with #7 on the other side. I cant find any listed firing order that matches that. 1,2,3,4 run under the air filter in the first picture and are too fuzzy in the second.

It's hard to tell but I bet that's 7 and 8 next to each other which would make the order 15426378.

Is there any reason there would be 2 wires on either the positive or negative side of the coil. I can't help but think there were 3 wires there before I tore it apart.

I have a Pertronix ignition. 2 wires come out of the distributer. One goes to the positive side of the coil and the other to the negative side. Also connected to the positive side is a 12v source.

From the wire colors and year model it sounds like you have the breakerless ignition (duraspark). It only had the red-green and green-yellow wires. If you have a tach it goes to the neg side of the coil also.
