Did any of you fellers see Trucks TV today?
They showed the Never Die Lithium Ion automotive battery.
Seems incredible.
Was wondering......"What's the catch?"
It just can't be as good as it sounded.....can it?

i can only imagine the sticker shock on one of those, it sure would be great though, ill bet the cold cranking amps would be huge

Similar batteries are in the motorcycle market right now. I am running a LiPFeO (usually goes by the name of "Lithium Iron") in a motorcycle right now. It is a drop in replacement and works on a standard 12V system. From reading the website they are doing there best to hide what technology they are using. So I can only guess based on all the research I did in the past.

Compromises? Yes! It has exceptional cranking capacity but reserve capacity is horrid. So long as the starter starts the engine, you are doing great. But they go dead fast if you put a sustained load on them. Listen to a radio with the engine off, winching a dead engine truck, not a good plan.
Cold weather. Things get interesting. The internal resistance goes up as the temp goes down. They are not good cold batteries. The motorcycle trick is to turn the key on and run the headlight for a minute or two. This loads the battery, the internal resistance warms the battery up and the bike will now start. But if you go straight to the starter button, they are known for a slow crank in the cold.
Do not run them flat, the cells will not recover. While not good for lead acid, you lose some capacity running them dead it will pretty much totally kill a Lithium Iron.

As for that button for an emergency start. Looks to be an internal disconnect override.

Does the battery work? Listen to that diesel start at the end of the show. That wasn't exactly a great sound as the engine started to crank. Sounds like it is lacking a bit of cold cranking capacity.

Would I run one? well I am on the motorcycle. But the battery in that is optional, it will start and run without one. In a race car to save weight, sure I would run one. Something with a winch? No. A daily driver? Probably not. Would I use this company? No. They are hiding there battery technology to make it non-comparable to other batteries on the market. There are batteries on the market with a track record. For the Bike I have a Shorai.

The battery is different. You have to be aware of that and learn to live within the limits of the new technology. Didn't say bad, just different. We are well versed in what lead acid does and have adapted to its abilities. Lithium Iron just has different properties.

I watched the show and then checked out their website. Wasn't happy with the way the site worked or was layed out. Couldn't find any real good info within a reasonable amount of time. Kind of got bored with the site real quick so i left.

Im with Bronco, I run Lifepo I think its called from a company called Ballistic. There is another company called Shorei that also seems to be pretty popular. One on a sport bike and 3 in some performance/ race style jetskis. THey are known for being alot smaller, about half the size of the stock batteries and often like 7 pounds lighter. Ive had good and bad experience with them much like Bronco had said. Ive had them work then 5 min later not turn over. There suppose to have a long shelve life and low discharge as they seat but I cant back that up. I even bought a special charger cause its the only thing that can tell you whats going on with the batteries. It offers a special ballance charge to charge the 4 cells evenly. Seems like when a battery goes down its always cause one cell willnt take a charge when the other 3 will read around 4 amps. Ive only ever had issues with the 3 watercraft style batteries so maybe due to there environment of lots of moisture and harsh bouncing and pounding maybe the issue. They do cost about twice to 3 times as much of the stock batteries.

lol... Like Bronco said I do still run them and I dont have a pos or neg feeling about them yet.

Goodluck!

That was a funny sequence. And still turned out to be a great trip!
And agree about how the diesel started on the show. I might use the battery, but I'd still have two of them in a diesel.

I could not find the exact battery they had but similar looking units went for ~$1500!

I might pay $400-$500 but not that.

Friend of mine sent me this today.

Seems like marketing BS with no data or facts to backup the claims. Most of it seems flat out false (better spark for a battery change?). As far as I know, the vehicle runs off the alternator and regulator after the vehicle starts. Too many unsubstantiated claims on that website. I'd rather stick to a good lead-acid battery myself. How can they claim better regulated power? The alternator and voltage regulator dictate that. Electronics, starter, alternator last twice as long....yeah right.

1 Amp hour = 2 Amp hour = lie. An amp hour is an amp hour. If you pull 20 amps for an hour out of a 20 amp hour battery you have depleated it, doesn't matter what it is made of. What Lithium starting batteries can do is give a big cranking amp out of a small reserve capacity.

Also note that they do not have a CCA rating, only a Cranking Amp rating.

Mighty thick marketing. Not a fan of marketing through obscurity either.
